You are right. The TF poll is probably better.

Thank you. Last year means ****ing nothing.

I am tired of people using that as an excuse.

I agree that just because a team finishes #1 they shouldn't automatically be ranked #1 the next season. Since the 1967 season the AP has ranked the prior champion #1 in preseason 12 times, or just under a third of the time. So to state the obvious, over two thirds of the time they didn't.

Now one might argue that a third of the time to too often, but I don't know with what basis one could make that claim. Football is not a random process. The type of teams that have been given this consideration have been dynastic type teams (e.g. ND, OK, USC, NE, Miami). Of the eleven times that are history, only two teams finished the year ranked #1 (only 7 teams overall went #1 throughout the entire year), but they were all very good teams. Only two teams finished the year ranked outside of the top 5 and none out of the top 8, so it doesn't look like they were making wild ass guesses. My point is that the evidence suggests that the AP does look at each year independently.

    In the table below
    Col 1 = Season
Col 2 = The team that finished #1 the prior season and was ranked #1 in preseason.
Col 3 = The team that won the NC
    Col 4 = Repeat of Col 2
Col 5 = Final ranking of team in Col 2 at the end of the year

    Code:

    1967 ND USC ND 5
    1969 OSU TX OSU 4
    1972 NE USC NE 4
    1973 USC ND USC 8
    1975 OK OK OK 1
    1986 OK PSU OK 3
    1990 Mia Col Mia 3
    1992 Mia AL Mia 3
    1996 NE FL NE 6
    2002 Mia OSU Mia 2
    2004 USC USC USC 1
    2005 USC ?? ?? ?

maybe, maybe not. I guess it depends on where they finish?
I don't think there should be a poll in preseason at all.

BTW: who made you king of morons?
