Dandy Don reported today that LSU would start charging fees to listen to LSU games on the internet. DD made some great points about people not living within local broadcast ranges, not to mention our service personnel stationed around the world many who are in harm's way. IMO this cannot stand. I use the internet to listen to games that are not broadcast regionally or nationally. Reception is only poor to good at best. I know it takes a lot of money to run a world class program, but I don't think this is a good way to raise funds. People only use the internet as a last resort. I think this will piss off a lot of fans, me included. :angryfire

Am I the only one who doesn't care about this? It's not that expensive really?

Would I like it to be free? Yes...

But I'll pay the fee if I have to...This obviously was a business decision and I have no problem with it...

Honestly, people who don't take the time to title their posts clearly or topically piss me off more than having to pay for streaming audio or video via LSUSports.com.

Clearly, it's a supply/demand thing: use continues to go up, therefore upgrades to the provider are made, all of which costs $$. Doesn't seem unreasonable to start charging for the service if usage goes up, not at all.

Well....I agree with you to a point. And that "point" would be if they charged me $25 or more, each week, for a "choppy" reception....Then I would draw the line and be disappointed....

It's an issue that has long plagued Louisiana. For some odd reason we think that it should be supplied to us free of charge. Roads, Fire Services, Utilities, etc. No matter what the cost it's always too much and no one can afford it.

Get over yourself. Some things are worth paying for. Some things aren't. YOU decide it's worth to you and get on with your life. I learned pretty early that life isn't free.

    Thanks Dad...

    free internet... same.

It ain't that simple. Dandy Don put it well.

"I know that it takes a lots of money to run a great program such as LSU's, but I believe that LSU has gone too far in charging Tiger fans to listen to Tiger sporting events over the internet. I think that it is very unfair that our military men and women fighting to protect our freedom have to pay to listen and very unfair to Tiger fans living outside the signals of WWL 870 AM, KWKH 1130AM and the flagship station 98.1 FM in Baton Rouge. There are many LSU fans living in other states who live on fixed income and many elderly and handicap Tiger fans who have a hard time paying their monthly bills who will be affected by Coach Bertman's decision. I urge the LSU Board of Supervisors and LSU Athletic Director Skip Bertman to reconsider. There are plenty of other ways to raise money than to charge our military men and women, and Tiger fans living on fixed incomes, the opportunity to listen to LSU Sporting events on the internet."

The way they did it last year, you had to sign up for an eatel account- monthly statement, solicitations, etc. The internet reception for the one game on video was horrible. Then, if you forget to cancel the service, you will get bills for the next 6 months. Hopefully, they will have a pay per game option- you just pay your $$ and Eatel is not with you for the rest of your life.

I don't care for the decision either. But this is mostly coming from the aggrevation of almost everything cool on the internet that used to be free suddenly becoming a pay service. i.e. Yahoo Fantasy Sports cool gadgets, all the old broadcast.com sports broadcasts, increasingly more and more of ESPN's coverage being dubbed "Insider", now LSU sports broadcasts.

BTW, is this policy all sports? Or just football?

I don't know about how you guys feel about this, but I get pretty ticked whenever someone uses our "military personnel" as a springboard for their OWN interests. In other words, I hate it when people say "oh... now our military has to pay.." but in all honesty THEY themselves are the ones who DON'T want to pay. It just erks me that they use the military so that they have a legitimate claim for whatever service they want to be free. This happens a lot with veterans and the elderly. I just think it's a pretty low thing to do.... But, I really don't mind paying to hear LSU broadcasts... but it does get to be a bit much since I listen to EVERYTHING online (80-90% of the baseball games that i don't go to,) and DAMN near 95% of the bball games.
