Stoops Gets Huge Bonus Incentive In Amended Contract

    POSTED: 1:31 pm CDT June 24, 2005

NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops will receive a $3 million bonus if he remains the Sooners' coach through the 2008 season under an amendment to his contract that was approved by the OU Board of Regents.

Meeting in Ardmore Thursday, the regents also extended Stoops' contract by one year, through the 2011 season, and increased some of the incentive bonuses already in the contract.

"This is another step to us ensuring coach Stoops stays with us for a very long time," OU athletic director Joe Castiglione said.

Stoops earns $200,000 in base salary, but with outside income he is guaranteed $2.4 million in 2005. The contract provides for a $100,000 raise each year. Stoops also can make almost $500,000 more if he achieves every incentive bonus.

Castiglione's contract also was revamped to provide for the potential of $75,000 more each year; he makes $295,000 in base salary and $200,000 from outside income.

Eight assistant football coaches also received hefty raises, with a combination of increases to base salary and guaranteed outside income.

Defensive coordinator Brent Venables' total package increased by $20,000, to $255,000. Offensive coordinator Chuck Long's jumped from $200,000 to $220,000. Other raises included: co-defensive coordinator Bobby Jack Wright (from $155,000 to $195,000); co-offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson (from $180,000 to $200,000); defensive line coach Jackie Shipp (from $155,000 to $175,000); running backs coach Cale Gundy (from $150,000 to $170,000); tight ends coach Kevin Sumlin (from $150,000 to $170,000); and receivers coach Darrell Wyatt (from $150,000 to $170,000).

Incentive bonuses for the assistants also were increased, and a bonus for winning the BCS national championship was inserted into each contract.

Raises for coaches of other sports also were approved Thursday, including an increase for women's basketball coach Sherri Coale from $470,000 to $500,000.

Men's gymnastics coach Mark Williams, who guided his team to a national championship this year, received a $11,000 raise, to $78,000.

OU President David Boren stressed the raises and bonuses were funded mostly by private donors and ticket revenue.

"We are not talking about using public, taxpayers' funds," Boren said.

Stoops also will be given 35 hours of private airplane use, and the incentive bonuses already in his contract were increased. If OU wins the BCS national championship game, Stoops would receive a $250,000 bonus, an increase of $100,000 over the previous bonus.

"I appreciate any consideration the university shows me in the way of contract extension and incentives," Stoops said. "The administration has shown its gratitude for what we've done and its belief in what we still hope to do in the future.

"I feel very fortunate to coach at the University of Oklahoma.

Stoops is 67-12 in six seasons, with three Big 12 championships. The Sooners have played in three national championship games during Stoops' tenure, winning the first.

    Talk about being overpaid........

The only other coach in America who would be more overpaid is none other than Mack Brown.

Stoops has lost 3 "big games" in just the last two seasons alone.

1-Kansas State blew out OU in 2003 for the Big 12 Title.
2-LSU beat OU for the 2003 NC.
3-USC just outright embarrassed OU for the NC in 2004.

Looks like a major raise is due to me.

On the other hand, Mack Brown has been nothing more than a runner-up in the Big 12 South for the last 5 years. However, if you listen to Mack Brown and Shorthorn fans talk you would think that Texas has been routinely playing for the NC every year. What is truly pathetic is the hype that the OU/Texas game gets as if it is some huge game on the national scene with National Title implications. The reality is that even by winning that game Ou has had some trouble winning their own conference. So as is 2003, what did that say about Texas? Texas couldn't beat the 2nd place Big 12 team (OU)
which got DESTROYED by Kansas State.

They should rename the OU/Texas game as the "Over-paid/Overhyped Bowl".
Texas and OU are two of the most over-rated and over-hyped teams in the country every year. That goes for their coaches as well.

    Re: Talk about being overpaid........

texas, yes... oklahoma... I dunno, it's tough to say... I mean in a board filled with, "winning the sec west is enough" fans. you'll probably get contested on this issue.... I mean the man dominates the big 12 regular season year after year and got tripped up in the championship game once with an injured qb. it's safe to say oklahoma's a good team... I dunno about getting a raise... but he's doing an okay job if I do say so myself.

but I often times too wonder why the ou-ut game gets so much hype... it's like everyone getting excited to watch the notre dame usc game... just because it's a rivalry doesnt mean the outcome's gonna change...

    OU owns the horns.

I'm not making any direct accusations or anything, don't know for sure that something is "going on" that shouldn't BUT...when you see this over the top, well beyond all reason approach to keeping a freaking football coach, one can't help but wonder what overzealous boosters can be-or are-doing beneath the surface.

Just saying that, if some ugly booster-related scandal erupts in the years to come, I for one wouldn't be surprised at all.

$3 million bonus? Highest paid (or in the top 2-3) coach in the land? Use of private airplanes?

What, they gonna get him a replica of Air Force One to fly around in next?

Don't give Poops and Boren any ideas!

Yesterday's paper also had a front page article about how tuition is being raised at OU (again). With a short blurb next to it (with the full sports page article referenced) right next to the tuition story. Bad PR move!

If Saban had stayed here the LSU moiney machine would be paying him just as much. Stoops deserves what he gets, 67-12 over 6 seasons with 3 National Championship game appearances is quite good.

As for Brown, he may not be able to win the big game but he sure has done much better than any UT coach since Royal, I'd be happy with him if he had that kind of record at LSU.

i don't know why people get in such a huff over these salaries. These coaches deserve it. Do you realize how much Stoops make for OU? Do you realize how much more money a 12-1 season and a nc game appereance brings in compared to an 7-5 season and a small bowl win? its about 15-20 million more and maybe more then that. You have to figure in sales of clothes, memorablia, etc.

exactly. i think its funny how many people used to buy into the academia view that football coaches are overpaid, etc. College football is a billion dollar booming business boys.

There's no telling how much someone like saban and stoops are actually worth in relation to the amount of revenue they generate.
