http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2056092&num=6 Here's the link to page 6, which is where LSU is. Here's a preview of what they say. They give alot of credit to our offense. Very complimentary. Unfortunately, we've still got the fall QB question & although it's not mentioned, I think ESPN is probably wondering about Les Miles' coaching as well.
Not sure why this is not apparent to everyone… but in Division 1 college football having a Michael Vick as QB is not necessary to win a national championship. If someone could go back and provide info on the last 10 years of top 2-3 teams in the nation, I would bet you a cold beer that less than 20% were stars on the next level. If I was a HC I would want a cerebral QB with tools to get the balls to the skilled guys around him versus a selfish, one track mind QB. Especially with the OL, RBs, and WR LSU will have the next 2-3 years. LSU has the talent to exploit whatever defense we face as long as our field general does not try to do to much. Give us solid versus exceptional QB performance next year week end and week out and we will be in the BCS.
I'd rather a cerebral QB that is also a terrific QB myself, but you're right, most of the top teams have had average QB's who ran their offense effectively.
you dont have to have a great QB to win a title. You just have to have a QB that doesn't make many mistakes and has an adequate completion percentage. also, if the players that surround him can carry the load and take the pressure off him(like all the tailbacks you guys have, and the ones we had last year) then great seasons can be had.
Sometimes you have so much talent at WR that a highly-skilled QB can own every game from kickoff to the final whistle. We've had this conversation 6,131 times. The "give me a QB who is smart" talk is fine and dandy, but it's not really in the cards (yet) IMO. Asking for a Matt Mauck right now is like ordering Fresh Lobster at Arby's. Russell is not brilliant by anyone's measure. Flynn has yet to demonstrate that he can consistently distribute the ball to a variety of WR's running a variety of routes. LSU is not locked in at QB right this moment. This team will live and die on QB play - not brains, not skills, but a very good combination of the two (with skills being the dominant ingredient). Flynn knows the offense better - great! Can he hit Bowe at 65 yards out after seeing him out of the corner of his eye? Russell can. Russell is a better athlete (if you have not accepted this yet please stop abusing drugs) - great! Can he be a leader and adopt and regiment a disciplined preparation routine that won't make Miles lose as much hair as Saban did? Flynn can. I've said it all along and I'm sticking to my guns - Perrilloux is one of the smartest football players I have ever seen play. I think it is his best attribute. The fact that he is a freak of an athlete is, amazingly, something I noticed later on. Skills and brains - this combination is out there for elite programs like LSU. The idea that one has to be sacrificed in favor of the other is ridiculous to me. All this talk about having the best RB's and WR's in America is great and fun, but we need a QB who demands respect, is a superior athlete, and who can manage a game - we need all of these qualities if you ask me. Not one or two, but all three of these qualities. The success of this football team will hinge on BIG QB PLAY - not consistent or conservative, but BIG QB PLAY. I don't know that Flynn has it physically, I don't know that Russell has it mentally, and I don't know how capable Perrilloux is of directing an SEC offense as a True Freshman. One of these kids is going to have to add another club to their bag, another tool to their toolbox. Skills / ability, brains / preparation, or exceptional leadership and maturity need to be obtained and on display this summer. We need all 3 dimensions for this team to play up to speed. The race is on...
