Why wouldn't we? So what if Butch Davis couldn't get it done in the pros? He did at Miami what Saban's done at LSU: took a program that was severely underperforming and got it back up and running as it should. In fact, Davis brings some of the same important qualities to a college head coacing job as Nick: extensive pro experience, excellent recruiting skills, ability/desire to serve as "General Manager" of a football program. Butch has been interested in the LSU job for years and likely would have been offered the job had Nick Saban turned it down. Add to this the fact that, a la Steve Spurrier, Butch has been burned at the NFL level and the odds of him staying put and keeping LSU dominant for, say, the next decade or more are far better than Nick Saban staying put for the same period of time.
yeah if this happens Butch Davis isnt going anywhere no one in the nfl will probably give him another job and yeah yall know the rest....
What worries me about Davis is that being down here in Orlando I know alot of Miami fans and not a single one of them thinks he was a good game day coach. They all say he eventually out-talented his opponents. I work with about a dozen of them and they all think Coker is better. That scares me. Overall they kind of dislike him but some of that is due to the way he left I'm sure.
I have heard the same thing about davis. he's not a good x and o's coach. he benefited from recruiting in the fertile florida region. it has been rumored that he backstabbed a number of cleveland players to the point that there was a void of trust on the team. why do you think he left half way into the season? rudderless ship. anyone but butch!
btw funny when I posted a similar article yesterday, it gets tossed into the rubber room. censorship at its finest.
Let me say this: if/when Saban leaves, the LSU football program will be in its best shape, so to speak, in nearly 20 years. The last time the Tigers had it's ducks in a row and had a coach leave was Bill Arnsparger. I, for one, have zero interest in seeing some relatively unproven, Mike Archer, Gerry Faust or Ron Zook-type guy elevated to the HC position. I want someone who's proved himself somewhere along the way. Period. Say what you will about Butch, he's got some championship bling to back up his resume. The LSU program in its current state is not fit for someone just taking off his head coaching "training wheels". No thanks.
How is Saban an "Ohio native" as this reporter says? He's from WV orginally, correct? Just because he lived in Ohio doesn't make him a native. Carface: Like the avatar! :thumb: -Dr. "My reputation around here isn't so hot" Torgo
got news for you: butch davis is not the only qualified coach out there. I am just lothe to annoint butch davis as a potenial replacement when his college success was at a independent school which recruited itself. after hearing how that cleveland debacle went down, I'm not sold on butch davis. I mean he ran excellent football people in ron wolf and dwight clark out of cleveland. I realize that the NFL is different than college, but there are many similarities. butch davis always seems to do things his way and that, IMO, is a big weakness. also remember, as GM and coach, he's responsible for the lack of talent at cleveland as he drafted a number of first round busts (remember courtney brown and gerald warren?) what's that say about davis' ability to analyze talent? I'll pass.
