I think the top 4 teams in the BCS should play in 2 of the 4 BCS bowl games (rotated obviously). So #1 plays #4 and #2 plays #3, as DarkHornet proposed. The 5th bowl game serves as the game between #1 and #2 in the BCS after the regular bowl games are played. One more game played on the 8th of January. In this manner you won't end up with teams with 3 losses involved. If you can't make it into the top 4 of the BCS by season's end, too bad. It's fair, it's quick, and it's sane.
Why would you want college football to be completely different than every sport? I guess we should just eliminate playoffs in all sports if it's an idiotic idea. Whoever has the best record at the end of the year wins it all. No more Super Bowl, no more World Series....... Completely and utterly rediculous. College football is the only team sport in this country that does not have a playoff once the regular season is over. There is absolutely no reason for this. Give me some playoffs.
islstl . . . that is the only kind of playoff format I support. But, if you have two undefeated BCS conference teams left at the end of the season (assuming they are ranked 1 and 2), why have a 4 team playoff?
You are a commissioner of one of the BCS conferences aren't you? You argue against a playoff in every way possible.
AS flawed as the NC crowning system is walking away from it is walking away from decades of history and tradition that exists in the bowls. Its the history and tradition that make college football so great. And the playoff system using the bowls is as flawed as the BCS. What if five major conference teams go undefeated. Who gets left out? I know it isnt very likely, but it could happen. The BCS works just as well as that propsed system.
I am not sure what you are asking. I am not even really proposing a playoff. I am just saying that after all the regular bowl games are over, have that extra 5th BCS bowl game which ends up being the NC game (rotating basis). But only the top 4 BCS teams would be eligible to qualify to play in this extra game (NC). I repeat. It's fair. It's quick. It's sane.
he's saying if only 2 teams deserve to be in the NC game and you let 2 others in and one wins it, its crap.
No, it would not be. Cuz more than likely it's a team like USC who has an easy schedule at #1 that would get their ass handed to them by a 1 loss #4 BCS team in the regular bowl games. USC would just sit home and not play in the NC, and deservedly so. I would also propose that the 2 games that pit the top 4 teams in the BCS be played on Jan 3rd and the championship be played on Jan 10th. Lots of money for everyone.
agree and given our persepective from the SEC over the years it definitely fits us best. hell, the more teams the merrier in the SEC's case but I have always liked the 4 team scenario with the bowl games as well. Wasn't that little nickies plan from the outset? i think so.
tirk got it. I just don't think an extra game is needed if you have two undefeated BCS conference teams left over at the end of the season. I feel that we are headed toward something like this in the future, but that it may be only in cases of multiple one loss teams or undefeated teams in a given season. It's only going to be a matter of years before every BCS conference has a title game. So there might not be a need for a playoff or extra game. All of this stuff is subjective. I agree that a playoff is a perfect format for team sports to choose a winner. I just also like the bowl system for college football. I feel with 120 teams and a limited amount of weeks available for a season, a bowl works to the advantage of all the teams. If college football adopted a playoff I'd still follow LSU and the sport.
