Oh, I'm not saying that Gilbert didn't appear to have tons of upside. I'm merely pointing out that UT had only a true freshman as a back-up to McCoy. Some people seem to think we're the only program left in a lurch because of poor QB depth. Red touched on it earlier this week in another thread that top QB's don't typically want to go to a school that has recently signed a top QB. That's why there are so many depth problems at that position, in particular. But LSU fans think it's only us.
His receivers didn't help him at all. After their kicker played dodgeball with the upman on that kickoff there were two catchable balls that were dropped. That was huge and would have gotten them at least close to field goal range. Instead it was 3 and out.
It's hard to predict what would've happended but it does suck when you lose your QB...especially when he's a very good one. I don't think it would've hurt Alabama as badly as their QB is just average. Imagine if Alabama had lost their running game. We all know it takes a really good team and good fortune to win the title. I believe Alabama has a really good team and no one can argue the great fortune they had this year. I believe the latter is what won them the title this year. I didn't see as much separation from the top 6-8-10 teams this year as in most years. I kept waiting for Alabama, Texas, Florida, etc. to step up and look like THE dominant team this year but nobody ever did. In the end it came down to which team would be fortunate enough to survive. Congrats Coach Shula! You built a winner. :hihi:
I agree 100%, the leadership a Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, Matt Flynn, etc;... bring to a program is tremendous. And not easily replaced
 If we follow the logic that is routinely spat out on this forum, by LSU fans and some Bama fans, this is the only explanation that we have for Bama's:crystal:
Yes, he is, but he was a lost lamb out there most of the time last night--albeit with his receivers giving him little help. But I found their receivers, minus Shipley, to be a weak link any time I saw them play this year.
Agreed, if Malcolm Williams catches that sure touchdown pass, then who knows what happens. Stacey since you live in D/FW, whats up with receivers from Texas with the last name Williams who drop passes?
Then what exactly was their calling card? The running game wouldn't have any SEC defenses up at night.
