    DING DING DING

Red got it! It's a Thermal Expansion Valve (TXV). It is attached to the indoor evaporator coil (unit in your attic). The copper coil is a temperature bulb that actually allows the valve to open and close based on temperature. All new A/C systems have this and if you don't have one ...you're paying too much for electricity, meaning the SEER rating on your system is not very high resulting in more watts to operate your system.

    Your turn, Red!

it's hinged, so it's some type of bender

No, it's a puller of some sort. When a strap or the sort it put between the curved and bottom part, then you attach something to the eye on the other end ...it bites and you can pull it ??

I'm thinking along those lines too.

Maybe used to pull wire fencing tight.

I'll accept that, although there is a more specialized tool for fence stretching.

It is a cable puller, so that you can quickly hook up a cable to a come-along or other winch.
