    It shapes metal when you have it heated up in a fire.

    An early cattle prod? The big end holds eat and would be used to get the cow's attention

    Bingo.

    There is a pumice stone or asbestos cloth inside the coil. In the 19th century when every house had a fireplace and kerosene was a common household commodity, this device was kept soaking in a can of kerosene. Then they would light it and it would burn for 15 minutes or so and start up the logs.
