UT experience

Coach February is safe for today. There are several things, however, that might be his undoing.

For reasons unknown, Mack steadfastly refuses to dump his offensive coordinator. While I have to respect his loyalty, I can't understand his thinking. This year's OU game is only the most recent of many very poorly planned and called games for the OC. Under the current OC, players just don't get better. They get older, they gain experience, but they don't get much better. The young QB Perilloux should consider this. If Brown won't dump his OC, Perilloux should go elsewhere or he may be destined to be the next Vince Young.

The UT program makes a fortune and many believe that this is good enough as far as the administration is concerned. Many with the deep pockets seem to be content with 9 and 10 (and more) win seasons and seem to have become accustomed to their yearly arse-kickin' in Dallas at the hands of the sooners. As long as daddy deep pockets is happy, Mack is safe. :)

Usually, UT rebounds from the OU loss to run the table (or close to it). In the recent past, they were able to do this by putting together a few quality wins but many of their post-OU opponents were so-so. This year may be different as most teams left on the Horns schedule are pretty good and capable of competing with them and possibly beating them. Surely all of their remaining opponents watched the OU game and see that if you force Texas into a passing game, they are in deep sneakers. If they go on a slide, Mack will probably be forced to do something (like dump his OC and possibly others) to save himself. If they win out, expect no staff changes.

Groundhog day again. Around here, for the last 5 years, the week after the OU game has been really interesting. And always the same. Mack takes the blame, blah, blah, blah, vows to get better, blah, blah, blah, and usually, the offensive scheme changes a bit. But hide and watch and wait another year and Stoops will outcoach him and his staff again. The national media is catching on to the "Mack-is-a-great-recruiter-but-doesn't-develop-his-players" thing. This is eventually going to hurt him. The Peterson kid from OU said that he didn't sign with Texas because of this. Not good. :dis:

Mack is a great public relations guy. From all appearances, he seems like a pretty good guy. He represents the university well. But.......he's never won anything anywhere. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

My guess would be that Mack will have to make SOME kind of move after this season. We gave up 65 to OU and had our 4th straight horrific offensive performance, so he fired the DC. This year we only gave up 12 to OU against what is probably a better and definitely more balanced OU offense with the new DC and had the 5th straight horrific offensive performance against Oklahoma. I'd have to think that if he wants to save himself, he will need to toss Greg Davis.

thanks for the reply and I agree with all of it. We had the same political conundrum at LSU through the 80's. Politcal heads up top overlooking the best interest of the football program for their own pockets. Luckily, recent our ex-chancellor Mark Emmert (now at Washington U) had the foresight to change the entire perspective of the administration. Well, their perspective may not have changed yet he willed his vision whether they like it or not.

Its quite scary to think how good UT could be with a top coach as Nick Saban there and you can rest assure everyone outside of Austin is glad Mac is there.

As far as developing players its quite obvious Mac has a serious problem in that area. With the studs UT has had on defense the last 3 years its amazing they aren't top ranked every year. They played very well versus OU but having 45 yards passing late in the 4th qtr for Vincent Young explains it all.

How can Mac expect to beat Stoops being one dimensional? no chance since he is a defensive coach in case MB forgot. Your guys best shot was this year as OU is nothing near they were last year offensively. Defensively they are good but nothing special so far.

p.s. send our kid back, we can develop him. someone by the name of ryan perilloux. Do you accept C.O.D.'s?

That is far from being accurate. How is OU not as good this year? They literally returned everybody and now they have a better running back...a much better running back. Jason White is also a lot more mobile than last year and is healthy. Just because they don't open up the playbook against weak teams early in the season doesn't mean that the offense has regressed.

    Pre-Texas game 2003:
    453.8 yards per game
    37.2 offensive points per game
    0.8 turnovers per game
1 heisman candidate to worry about

    Pre-Texas game 2004:
    471.5 yards per game
    38.75 offensive points per game
    1 turnover per game
2 heisman candidates to worry about

I'm also not quite sure how you can say that the defense is nothing special.
Bowling Green: 24 points (39.6 average)
    Houston: 13 points (18.5 average)
    Oregon: 7 points (26.6 average)
Texas Tech: 13 points (39.2 average)
Texas: 0 points (33.2 average)...first time Texas had been shutout in 24 years.

because I saw them firsthand in the sugar bowl and witnessed frankenstein white on his run to the heisman. this team is nowhere near they were last year offensively and you can run all the numbers you want.

You might want to try considering who they played before getting all geeked up over their current numbers.

Oregon? lost to indiana and crushed by ASU.

    bowling green?

texas tech? wow they smoked NU option personnell with a west coast offense.

cmon man, dont kid yourself thinking you have any future shot at OU in the future with stoops and mac head to head. Its nice to dream though.

I think everyone who follows the situation (including Mack) knows what the problem is and has known for some time. Mack just doesn't seem to be willing to fire the guy. As I said previously, I admire the guy's loyalty to his friend but another year of Davis at OC guarantees another sooner win. Stoops has got to be pleased with Mack's refusal to let the guy go. Hell, Stoops should be supplementing Davis' salary. After all, Davis has greatly contributed to Stoops success.

I agree with that. Greg Davis has got to go. Just about every Texas fan thought he needed to go LAST year. But yeah...Mack decided that he and his village idiot could not be seperated.

And I didn't see Jason White and the offense firsthand last year? I mean...we only got every OU game on TV here last year and this year.

Before you start questioning the teams that they put this year's numbers up against, you should look at this...
    Bowling Green: 3-2
    Houston: 1-5
    Oregon: 2-3
    Texas Tech: 4-2

The numbers that I gave up from last year were against:
North Texas: 9-4 (1-4 OOC, comparable to Bowling Green)
    Alabama: 4-9 (comparable to Oregon)
Fresno State: 9-5 (comparable to Texas Tech)
    UCLA: 6-7 (comparable to Oregon)
Iowa State: 2-10 (comparable to Houston)

Last year's numbers weren't really put up against better competition at all. Bowling Green and Texas Tech will likely be bowl teams at the end of this year. There were only two bowl teams played in those 5 games last year and one of them was because North Texas is in the worst conference in Div. 1-A football.

i'm not arguing numbers....I'm arguing what I see with my superman xray vision. I do not see near the same team with Clayton and Strait gone. I see a very good team but not the great team I thought they were last year. Though well coached teams mature and improve throughout the season, Peterson could help this team gel faster if he continues running as he did against your team. It should help develop frankentein and his passing game.
