He's about PAR for the course in Arkansas. I just don't like him as a person. http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/sec/arkansas/yearly_totals.php
I've been saying for years that Houston Nutt was the Dale Brown of college football. He can motivate his teams to play big and up for one game more than most, but over the long haul the lack of talent catches up with him. I have a very hard time fathoming any assemblance of an idea of why Tubby would leave Auburn for Arkansas. Sorry, just can't see it happening.
What troubles most Arkansas fans is that the administration has apparently accepted that being mediocre is about all we can expect. The only way I can explain the media love affair with Houston is the fact that most people do not remember the Hogs being very good, ever. When they see us playing a national power (such as LSU) close, their conclusion is that it is due to outstanding coaching. Add to that, We seem to play our best football against the Tigers, no matter how bad we've been throughout the year. While I can accept the fact that the Razorbacks will not have a top ten program every year due to recruiting base (or lack thereof), I do believe with the right head coach, and Tubs or B. Davis qualify, the Hogs would be a force to be reckoned with in the west every year, and a national player every few years. I've said it before, you guys don't realize what a bullet you dodged last year, Nutt is a D-II level coach at best. All that rah rah crap gets old very quickly, to players as well as fans.
What leads you to believe that? The University of Arkansas is the only major school in the state, and has only Arkansas State and a few Division II schools to compete with for local recruits. The state has just over 2.7 million people (about the size of Mississippi, Iowa, and Kansas, all of whom have two BCS-conference teams) and only one BCS-conference team. It's also only 4 hours from Kansas City, 5 hours from Dallas, and 5 hours from St. Louis. On a side note, the state of California has over 35 million people and only 4 BCS-conference teams. I'd like to know how much these ratios have to do with a school's winning and losing. In other words I wonder whether USC's winning is Pete C's genius or the fact that USC is in a state with a 9 million-to-1 population-to-BCS school ratio.
I heard they were doing some kind of trade... Auburn Receives: 1.Houston Nutt 2.The right to burn any fans bus that has a pig on it. Arkansas Receives: 1.Tommy Tubberville
I found this to be interesting so I borrowed it from another site. edit: For those of you who never go over to an Arkansas forum, "aMm" stands for Mississippi St and also, S**T. http://www.woopig.net/php/index.php?topic=37527.0
The quality of Arkansas high school football is just not up to par with surrounding states, and not even close to Texas or California. Don't have the numbers, but am willing to guarantee that a smaller percentage by population plays H.S. ball here, therefore a smaller pool. Very low numbers of D-I level players. I think a bigger emphasis should be put on recruiting Louisiana.Texas IS recruited hard, but we have almost no presence in St. Louis or K.C. That CAN change to some extent with a different staff, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Matter of fact, I have become so fed up with the state of affairs in Fayettville, that following the team is becoming difficult. There is a D-II team in my home town of Conway (University of Central Arkansas) that is moving up to D-IAA next year that plays great football, has an exciting style and quality coach. Sad to say, I may just have to lower my expectations and just enjoy good football.
I wouldn't be expecting to snag any high quality recruits out of Louisiana. We train our young ones better than that. :hihi:
I'm familiar with Conway. I ate at a good restaurant there once - can't remember the name but it was just below a hill and it had funny looking ceiling fans and they sold vegetables right outside the front door. It's been a while, obviously. I didn't realize Arkansas high school football was so poor. I guess it's more like a great plains state than a southern state, where football is king.
That would be Marketplace Grill. Good food. We have a new restaurant downtown call Mike's Place, thats as good as I've eaten at in much larger cities, private club too so they can serve alcohol! I know, I know. If your ever through again, try it out.
