the decent man coverage didn't show up until the 3rd qtr. we were lined up in a soft man/zone for most of the 1st half and begining of 2nd half. damn near every play, our DBs were lined up 7-11 yards off the WRs. And they constantly ran routes that kept them underneath the coverage. Sure, we limited their YAC because we were always right there, but the just took their 5-7 yards per play and marched right on down the field as if we weren't even there. Yeah, I knew they were passing, I'm sure Mallory and Peveto knew they were passing. But we GAVE them those short routes, and they took them happily.
I didn't "watch" the game, but it seems that we didn't start applying pressure until our back was against the wall. Our bend but don't break philosophy is not the LSU Defense that we love or expect. It is the same garbage we have had since Pelini got here, but it seems he was a better gameplanner. Also we always could move the ball some in most games, until this year. With young players, and long relaying of calls the problem is just compacted. Bottom line this scheme SUCKS and our promoted coaches are not ready for this level of football IMO. If we play a conventional offense (BAMA, SC, MSU) we do okay. If you can run and throw, or run the spread....WATCH OUT!! I thought Troy would test us, and we would lose to Ole Miss. I hope I am wrong. I just hope Miles has seen enough to know a change is needed.
Miles is a union man and promotes on seniority, but I think he has decided it's time to let his more talented guys play. Observations- My game ball goes to Chris Hawkins. He is playing some great corner. My other game ball goes to Drake Nevis. Let this guy play.
Part of the reason had to be that he knew Troy was going to throw the ball 72 (or so) times. So, we played nickel, dime, and even quarter probably. And we played it the entire game. And they threw almost every down. He probably needed to give some of the guys a breather.
