This from Dandy Don "Coach Pokey Chatman has four seniors on the team and four scholarships to give, but will only sign one player, Kristin Morris, a 6'3" power forward from Detroit who is a three-time All-State player from of Michigan. The reason for only signing one player is that Coach Chatman has more talent than see can play in each game and would like to give some of her younger players playing time next season." Womens baskeball has more scholarships than they will use yet baseball is limited to about nine scholarships which devide in to fractions among many players.
First I wouldn't put too much stock into what Dandy says about how many schollies or why she won't give out more, that just doesn't sound right. But you're right about Title Nine, it's went far beyond it's intended purpose. I haven't heard anything about that big panel that was reviewing Title Nine last year and that surprises me. Baseball get I believe 11.7 scholarships right now, totally ridiculous. One of my good friends son is at UGA on a .3 schollarship which is basically for food and other amenities. Georgia is similar to LA with the TOPS program though so he doesn't have to come up with much money. It's the out of state recruits that really get screwed.
Try being a "walk-on" at a private school like TCU which just went to almost 22K per year in tuition alone, they did AWAY with men's soccer program completely to accomodate Title IX.
