The #18 Jersey?

correction only 1 player of each number at 1 position so it would be legal to have an 18 on O and an 18 on D, its kinda hard to have NO repeat number when u only have 99 numbers to give to a 105 man roster =/

 

This is true, in the 2010-11 season, we had 3 players with the number 38. Alleman, Helton and Wing.

 

Not counting the retired numbers.

The new rule is if a number is retired after 2007, a current player can still wear the number.

Well then, what's the point of "retiring" the number?

 

It gives the player wearing it at the time the chance to finish his career with "his" number. After that particular player finishes the number will not be used again. If you had had #37 for 3 years and they told you to change for your senior year what would you think?

 

Confused the heck out of me too. It's just saying that if we retire #8 in honor of Mett after he wins the Heisman and leads us to a NC next year, that:

1) we have to wait 5 years

2) the future player wearing #8 at the time we decide to retire it doesn't automatically have to give up his number, it's at the discretion of the coach. But once that player is finished wearing #8, nobody else can wear it

Basically, it's just a grandfather clause
