I think that's called the Peter Principle....in any heiarchy, good people will always get promoted to their point of incompetence.

Unless you are good enough to realize you suck in that role.

I was recently offered such a role and though you want to have the back of the person offering the position, it was my duty to inform that person they are making a grave mistake placing me in that role. Let me just be great at what I do.

It's called the Peter Principle. Somebody wrote a book about it.

I don’t think a great individual worker, but failing as a manager is Peter Princple. An example would be district manager promoted to regional manager without the skills. Indiduals placed in charge of people, and failing, is another, very serious management problem.

The navy made a big deal that to get promoted you had to have a good (great) record, but promotions were based on an assessment how you would perform at next paygrade, rather than how you had performed at lower ranks.

Never saw the SR71 but when I was at Elmendorf AFB, AK got to see the original U2 a couple of times. It was called a "weather plane" by the AF although we all knew better. It wouldn't use hardly any runway to take off and when it was airborne would nose straight up and gone in a few seconds. It was basically a jet engine with a cockpit and long glider wings.

So there wasn't a big enough bump in pay.

Ton of money, but I would have run it to the ground. Flattering, but I would rather excel at what I do, not be known for the guy that started a dumpster fire.
