Hey college hoops fans, Dickie V here. Wow, what a tournament! Everything a fan could want – upsets, overtimes, and underdogs prevailing. It’s been awesome, baby!
Now, I want to talk about one of the underdogs that has made it to the Final Four: LSU. They’re going bananas in Baton Rouge, and why not? I mean they just knocked off the greatest program in the world of college basketball when they beat Duke, and that’s a lifetime achievement in itself.
A lot of people are jumping on the LSU bandwagon now, and some say they will take the whole enchilada. Now, I like this team too, don’t get me wrong, but there is no way they will pull it off my friends. Why? Because they just don’t have the experience, baby! I mean, sure they’ve got some real diaper dandies, but when it comes down to the wire, senior leadership wins titles.
Take Duke, for example. How many big games did hey win this year thanks to JJ Redick’s leadership? I mean, he is Mr. Clutch with a capital C. A real PTP’er who knows how to hit the trifecta in crunch time. And even in the loss to LSU, JJ never lost his confidence. Sure, he missed a lot of shots, but he’s still got the shooter’s mentality that you have to have to win in the big time. Did you notice how, even after JJ had laid enough bricks to build a subdivision, he just kept putting up those area code jumpers? That’s what you call senior leadership, baby, and LSU just doesn’t have it.
And don't forget, Mr. Redick was instrumental in capturing that ACC title for Duke, and, in a lot of ways, that's bigger than the NCAA title. Oh, and while we're on the subject, don't forget that JJ is the all time ACC scoring leader. Wow! What an accomplishment!!! Yes, my friends, JJ Redick is the ultimate college basketball player. I just can't say enough about the guy!!!
But back to LSU. I love Big Baby Davis. Ah, what a space eater the guy is! But there again, he’s just not in the same league as an experienced senior post man, like, say, Shelden Williams. I mean, let’s face it, Mr. Williams took Mr. Davis to school all night long Thursday night. It was an M&Mer from the opening tap. Ah, what an awesome specimen this guy is! He rebounds, he blocks shots, he slams and jams. And did you see the way he teamed up with JJ Redick to capture that prestigious preseason NIT title? Those NBA scouts are just salivating over the propect of drafting this guy. Hey, Mr. O’Neal, you better watch out, baby. Mr. Williams is on the way!
The last thing I see hurting LSU is coaching experience. I can’t remember their coach’s name, but that’s not important anyway. What is important is that he just doesn’t have the experience of a Mike Krzyzewski. Ah, Coach K, the greatest Xs and Os man that ever lived!!! And what a classy guy he is too! Have you ever seen someone look so sharp in a Chevrolet commercial? And he just brings out the best in his kids game in and game out. Take last Thursday for instance. Did you notice how he went over there and calmly talked to JJ midway through the second half as he was missing all of those shots? It would have been real easy for the kid to have lost his confidence after those first 30 minutes of play, but Coach K kept him confident. And just look at what happened – JJ went right back in and continued putting up those long range jumpers with perfect form. Sure, they didn’t go down, but that’s not the point. And just think, if just two of those babies had gone in, the Dukies would be marching on to that fourth national title. Yes sir, you just can’t say enough about Coach Krzyzewski, the greatest coach that ever lived.
And that’s why I just don’t see LSU going all the way this year.
