Of course they try to establish an image. As would any successful business.

I dont think they keep people out because they are poor, Jesse.

Please......the coolaide is flowing again in gumpland!!!!!! How many times have we heard this in the recent past, remember franny and hold the rope? How about the price is right? Then there was the son of the great coach come home to gumpland. You have a decent coach now but nothing is given and I don't see bama rising from the ashes anytime real soon, respectable maybe but not great.

I'm not calling you out in particular, but I do have a question. How would you rate these coaches in terms of talent? I would like as many opinions as possible in fact.

    Saban.
    Curry.
    Perkins.
    DuBose.
    Shula.
    Fran.

You've seen some of the Auburnites post here. It's a fair assessment, no?

    And yes, of age.

Drunk frat boys messing with football players also drinking leads to...???

I'm not saying that was the situation...but, picture that in your head, will ya?

Terry, since I’ve never been a Bama fan at any point in my life, I for one am not in a position to evaluate Bama players, past or present and really have no interest in doing so except on that one weekend – generally in November of each year. I think you’ll find a more meaningful and informed response to your inquiry on a Bama Board.

That said, Bama fans really need to get a grip. This is not the 60’s or the 70’s, or even the 80’s. College teams now have scholarship limits and higher academic requirement. Also, since the SMU Death Penalty, colleges recruiting and handling of players on campus are under a microscope. No athletic department can operate the way many of them operated in the old days. Not Nebraska, Oklahoma, Notre Dame or even Alabama. Personally I think Saban will improve Bama, but I do not think it will be the dominant SEC program it was under the Bear. The system college athletics is under now mandates a much more competitive game – which I personally think is good for college sports.

Saban is not “mini-Bear” and the system is set up to keep it that way. If Bama fans expect him to be, his tenure at Bama will be shorter than most of us originally thought.

    Where is Gene?

    I would go:
    Stallings
    Perkins
    Saban
    Curry
    Fran
    Shula
    Dubose

I appreciate the kind words Terry, all of the few AU regulars here are very good. Trolls are Trolls, no matter their affiliation.

I remember the frats at AU antagonizing the wrestling team. They should have stuck to messing with the football team......

Knowing what I know now, I would take Les Miles over ALL of them.

You missed Gene Stallings. He is the only one of those I might list above Saban, but it is close.

LVTGRFN post reminds me of a quote from saban about our 03 team, and how each situation is different. He talked after the Sugar Bowl about how he'd been concerned since summer camp about the lack of sr. leadership, or any emotional leaders, or enforcers of discipline from the team itself. He thought you had to have leadership. He never got it in the form he expected. But he said he realized after mid season that the team just ran well. Nobody was late, everybody did their assignments, and he finally concluded that EVERY player on the team was his own leader. They were mature individuals, and they took care of themselves. That's different, and I still find it interesting that there are many formula's for success, and depending on the people, what works one place may not work with a different set of people.
