1. I havn't heard much about his performance. I know it was only MSU... but 87% completion rating! WOW.... Last week he was getting crucified and I don't know why.

20 for 23 and 197 yards.... Watching the replay and he looks great. The only bad thing that can be said about him is the taking of sacks so easily. He continues to look for a play rather than throwing it away... But still.... 20-23....

((Also... MSU only got 60 yards in the second half...))
  2. I sure didn't see a problem. He looks very relaxed.
  3. I made a few comments about him in another thread... link

  4. Right. If there's one thing he needs to work on is to understand that he doesn't HAVE to complete every pass attempt--that he can throw it away instead of taking a sack.

Both he and Miles admitted that after the game. I think since they both said it, it's a good sign that they'll both be on the same page.
  5. I am starting to feel a little better about this team and the coaching staff after watching the replay. Only time will tell.
  6. My main concern with JR is his unability to get rid of the ball instead of taking a sack. This happened a few times yesterday. In the 3rd quarter, I would say it was the 3rd of 4th sack he took, the replay showed Coach Miles yelling, "Throw the ball, throw the ball, HOLY S###!" - That is exactly what I was saying while the play was going on.

My other concern is him locking onto one receiver and following him from snap to throw. That is what caused the deadly interception on Monday and what almost resulted in one early in the game yesterday.

  7. i agree. if he plays like that against bama, auburn, uf---lsu's in trouble. that kind of play will lead to turnovers against more talented teams. i think he'll get there, but he's gotta learn to pull the trigger and make quick progressions.
  8. How big is not playing the North Texas game now? I think if we play that game first instead of playing two top 15 teams in a row maybe things would be different. The UNT game might of helped both JR and our defense.

The only problem I still see JR having is staring down receivers and knowing when to throw the ball away. He still takes a sack instead of throwing the incompletion out of bounds. The Vandy game will also be another helpful game for us.

  9. It was interesting to see LSU practically run the West Coast offense. There were a few downfield plays, but there were a whole lot more quick drops and quick outs than we're used to seeing. Having developed that style of play could prove very handy against some of the tougher, more aggressive SEC defenses. I'm not saying that should be a fully-implemented system by any means. But if a team is taking away our running game or vertical game, it just may be a savior to be able to switch to that style. Speaking of 'vertical game'....

...the only other thing I would have liked to see from our offense was some deep bombs. We haven't seen much of that at all this year. I know Miles and Jimbo both like to do it, and this game would have been some good practice for it. I was thinking that maybe they were witholding it intentionally for scouting purposes. We could really burn a tougher D if they have no intentions of protecting the deep ball. Not sure if I agree with that line of thinking if that is the case. I think it's more important to practice it against a conference team.
  10. Having confidence has a lot to do with being a good QB. I think Russell had the confidence this game because he knew he was up against a sub-par defense.

For the Tenn game, I think he never had his confidence at all and walked into Tiger stadium intimidated. You're playing an SEC power, and you're the only college game on national TV that day....there were a lot of eyes on us, I think we broke some ESPN2 viewer record or something too.

I believe the coaching staff needs to mentally prepare the players better. Look at how Saban ran things. It was all business and everyone was professional. I think he ran the team almost like an NFL franchise, so if you act like a professional and think like a professional then you play like a professional.
