They went to the marsh and did a soil sample. If you remember in the Day after tommorrow they had those tubes of ice. Well it is the same thing except with dirt. And since the bottom of the marsh stays undisturbed the samples are perfect. What they do is they look for layers of sand from the gulf in the samples and the amounts and different levels represents how strong and how many storms happened during a certain time.
