It makes me sad to see all the Joe bashing today. Believe me, ever since this scandal broke in November, I have been one of JoePa's biggest critics. But he is gone, and at least for now, i'd like to remember all the good. Thanks to BigTen network for showing some old Penn State games today.

If you're at D-1 football coach with the power of JoePa and an allegation of child rape was brought against one of your assistants and happened at one of your facilities, I'm not sure how can you possibly sit there and say 'well, we like to think we'd know what to do, but unless you've been in that situation...'. No, I'm sorry, that doesn't work here. At least not for me. The right thing to do is perfectly clear. I realize JoePa is NOT the monster that did this, but his inactions possibly lead to more children being hurt. And by the way, the scenario you mention about bullying involved children, not adults. Any adult that saw what was happening is obligated to stop it. Besides, while both are wrong, bullying and child rape are not even in the same stratosphere.
No ... your confusing what he told the AD, and what he told McCreary. McCleary had additional talks and meetings with higher ups, and according to McCleary, he met with the CPolice department. Somebody from the police department needed to followup with Sandusky about the claim. That was not JoPa's job.
Indeed. But this canonization of Paterno by Penn State fans is both unfair and shameful. Again, he was doing what he should have done, regarding chain of command at a university involving a crime. But he also had the authority to totally and instantly ban Sandusky from the football program and athletic facilites. He facilitated any abuse that happened after the incident. I agree. Even the best men made bad decisions that they regret. But those become part of the legacy, too.
