sexual abuse (abuse of any kind) of children, is to me the ultimate wrong doing (along with murder). to have had any kind of knowledge and not take all steps to stop it, instead of doing the minimum required, if a huge fail. his legacy SHOULD have the askerisk, imo. we arent talking a game. we are talking the lives of innocent children altered forever, many which did not have to happen if sandusky had been properly reported and stopped.

I agree. I just pointed out some of the good he did over the years.

RIP. He was the figurehead of that university, and right or wrong, the (un) involvement during the scandal will be a chapter in his legacy. A dark one, but not the whole book.

I knew this sentiment would come, but wow.

I assume you have no kids.

This has to be the greatest tragedy in sport that didn't involve deaths.

As much as I'd like to agree with you, vigilantism is not a becoming trait to hold. JP told the police, and that is where his responsibility stops. The villains in this story are the university upper brass who influenced the police action.

As much as I loath the crime, and the perp, JP was not the perp. The perception will be what we make it. We can ignore that JP fulfilled his duty in reporting the crime to the police, or we can take the position of the vigilante, and be the judge, jury, and ezecutioner

I did make some nice cash over the years, but as you said, he gave a lot to charities....and he gave even more cash back to the University.

Joe Paterno never told the police.

Even if he had, the fact that his old friend Sandusky was camped out across the street for the next 9 years, and Paterno KNOWING what transpired, is something that simply can't be defended. More kids were molested since 2002 and that's all on Paterno's watch of inactivity.

I'm fairly certain that I read, that Joe stated on more than one occasion that he wished he had done more.

ETA: And a phrase from the Watergate era comes to mind. What did he know and when did he know it?

I thought about this; the fact that both died so soon after leaving coaching. Although Joe Pa was forced out...
