If both Jarmarcus and Dorsey declare themselves eligible for the NFL does that free up two more scholarships for this year ? I'll hang up and listen.

Yes, because they are both scholarship players. ESPN just said that Russell should declare real soon.

Yes and No. It frees up 2 more scholarships from our total limit of 85. However, we are limited to 25 a year and were already planning to sign the limit this year. Therefore, it will have no affect on our recruiting class this year, but may free up 2 spots in the coming years.

I never fully understood how that works.

That is my understanding, but I see us sign 26 or 27 some years. How does that happen? Are they grey shirts, like Shomari Clemmons, or Trindon Holliday did?

That or some don't qualify academically.

LSU will likely end up signing 28 recruits.

Yes, you get 25 scholly's per year, but you CAN over-sign because like you said, JR and Dorsey's scholly's will be available, plus, you have to figure that there will probably be a couple of non-qualifiers that will be placed in JUCO for a year (like Clemons last year).

It seems like a lot of recruits also qualify for other types of scholarships. If an athletic scholarship is needed to bring in a player, a qualifing recruit can be given an academic scholarship to free up the athletic scholarship. Couldn't it?

They can get an academic scholarship, but they are considered walk-ons in that case I think. If they are not a walk on then they count against the 85 scholarship limit & thus the number we can bring in in a class.
