Putting together an LSU helmet for my nephew...any tips on painting and ACTUALLY getting the right LSU color?

Good luck on the project. Take a picture when it's done to show us (that is if it looks good! :thumb:  ).

I never took on such a task, so unfortunately, I don't have a lot of insight to give except that you should make sure you get "Royal Purple"--which is the official color.

I've already tried a couple of different paints, but without any success...just haven't had any luck getting the right tone or gloss finish. That deeper goldish yellow isn't something that i've easily found in the stores.

I would have 2 helmets and use one for the paint. Put a little on it and let it dry to see what the color looks like when it drys. and then go to hobby lobby and get the gloss sealer to give it that shine.

i kinda figured i'd end up putting some gloss sealer on it, gotta get the right color first though, looks like that's the toughest part.

You know what you can try is take the color sample to Sears and they have a machine that can get the color perfect. Might help out if you havnt done it yet.

If you cant get the right color, white not try the white style they did back in the independence bowl?

Don't foget you can get the decals for the helment either on ebay, lsu bookstore or tiger mania. Good Luck!

That's a heckuva project! Are you sure it wouldn't just be cheaper to buy a replica helmet? I have no idea how much they cost, but imagine it could get pricey painting a helmet.

Regardless, maybe try contacting the Equipment Manager or something? Dunno...

    Best of luck!

Take a sample to Lowe's in-store computer match, or call LSU and ask for the exact color number.

Nix that idea to go with that butt ugly I-Bowl helmet from DiZero's tenure. Geezem, he had some fugly unis.

You might try using the Pantone Matching System (PMS). LSU lists its PMS colors as Purple - PMS 268, Gold - PMS 123. If I remember right it's technically called Goldenrod, but I could be wrong. The folks at the paint company should be able to help you out. Also, call the LSU Ath. Dept and ask for Equip. Manager Greg Stringfellow or Mike Boniol, they would likely help you out.
