what about Gene Chizik head coach of Iowa State, used to be a defensive coordinator at Texas, and Joe Kines, used to be Bama's DC now is the DC of Texas A&M. Thoughts?

that would be assuming chizik is fired of course....

both have SEC experience, Chizik actually went undefeated 2 years in a row, 04 at Auburn and 05 @ Texas.

Chizik is definitely a good option.

Is he going anywhere soon, however?

looking at the Rivals list Punk posted, I would like to look into Bruce Fowler @ Vandy...most they gave up all year in a game was 24? In the SEC? With Vandy's athletes? Should be worth a look! :thumb:

Why would he leave a head coaching job to become a coordinator.
Yes its Iowa State but they are not going to fire him. he would have to quit and come to LSU.
    Doesnt really make sense.

Chizik was 3-9 in 07 2-6 in the big 12 finishing 5th in the big 12 north.
in 08 was 2-10 and 0-8 in the big 12 finishing last in the big 12 north.

If he is the mastermind behind that defense, then most definitely I would consider him.

No way should Vandy be able to compete defensively with a bunch of 1 star and 2 star players trying to fly around the ball.

But fly to the ball is exactly what they did this season.

Unbelievable job this year by Fowler.

And guess what Vandy was great at doing this year? Causing turnovers.

Novel concept. LSU should look into it.

I also referenced the Vandy DC on the Rivals DC thread; actually most points allowed was 42 to UF. They held LSU's common opponents to fewer points in every game except USCe (17 pts, same as LSU):

    Ole Miss -- 17 (LSU allowed 31)
    Auburn --13 (LSU allowed 21)
    Miss St -- 17 (LSU allowed 24)
    Georgia 24 (LSU allowed 52)
    UF -- 42 (LSU allowed 51)

Pick-6's inflate the UGA and UF scores for sure, but still appears to me Vandy's D handled those teams better.

    My $.02...

Pick 6s also inflated the Auburn and Ole Miss scores... but Vandy was very impressive considering their quality of players.

Vandy defensive stats compared with LSU, SEC rank in parentheses):

Total yds avg. Passing yds avg. Rushing yds avg.
    Vandy 318.7 (8) 173.7 (8) 145.0 (10)
    LSU 326.5 (9) 220.8 (9) 105.7 (5)

Overall not a huge difference; however, if we had Vandy's pass defense, we would have been 5th in total yds allowed instead of 9th. Maybe that gets us another win or two?

I think we'd all agree that LSU has better athletes than Vandy.
