If Oklahoma beats Iowa State by say 7, or 10, does LSU then jump OU in the human polls, assuming LSU wins? To an average fan, you may say, "why does this matter, because LSU is ahead of OU in the BCS." But if LSU gets to #3 in the human polls, they may jump BC in the BCS, according to my math.
Like I mentioned in an early thread, I'm not concerned with being ranked #2 after 9 games as much as I am concerned with being top 2 after the conference title games, but to comment on the current state of the BCS, those teams actually ranked ahead of us--Oklahoma in particular--need to lose just to make the path to the top 2 spots easier for us. And with OU already playing and beating Texas, there isn't much left on their remaining schedule to make anyone feel that OU won't be favored in all of those games. So, every week that passes by that OU pulls out a "W" just means that the likely hood of them losing for the 2nd time goes down. The Big XII isn't very strong this season, and the Big XII South is much stronger than the North this season. If OU wins out and makes it to the Big XII title game, we would need another K-State-like upset like we got in '03...and I don't like having to rely on that happening.
I agree with everything you just said. it's always just good to be #1 or #2, b/c you "know" that if you win out, you're in, something that isn't guaranteed to LSU right now. We all know BC will lose a game before it's over and that Michigan will beat Ohio State, but until it happens, it's all up in the air. So I agree that being #1 or #2 now means nothing at all, but it's still good for comfort to know that you're in the driver's seat and can control your own destiny, without needing any help.
Well, playing in position of already BEING in the top 2 didn't work too well for us...and it was 3-straight weeks in which we came out looking very flat in almost every aspect of the game starting with the Tulane game. You would think that if you're in position to control your own destiny, you avoid playing as flat as what we did for an extended period of time. Call me crazy, but the loss last week might have given us the spark and kick in the butt that we needed because we were sleep-walking as the #1 ranked team in the country. Hopefully, our guys have regained focus because of the pit-fall we had last week.
well the team began the year No. 2 and destroyed Miss St, Va Tech, USC, etc... I think the last few weeks has been more of fatigue and wear and tear than it was "we're #1, so we don't have to show up." I may be a little naive, but I think the team is just going through that part of the SEC schedule where they are wearing down a tad. the bye week couldn't be coming at a better time.
Not necessarily, what about #3 LSU jumping #2 USC in 03 w/o a USC loss during the last week of the season. And didnt a #3 UF jump a #2 Michigan during the last week of last season? IMO, being #2 doesn't mean you win out and you're in. There is a lot more to it than that. However, it does have a greater sense of comfort being #1 or #2 and winning out :thumb:.
I would rather us remain #3 for a little while because, each and every week I feel like we are inching closer to Boston College regardless. If we beat Auburn tonight, we will get very close to passing OU in the polls but they are 100+ points ahead of us right now. I would rather our team play with a sense of urgency and desperation that a #3 team looking in would have rather than as #2 team looking ahead to the BCS Title game.
An impressive win over Auburn tonite and I think you are pretty much correct. I think we come very close to jumping OU in the human polls, which SHOULD put us ahead of an idle BC for #2 in the BCS standings. At that point, there is little or no chance for OU to catch us in the BCS standings. That would be more significant than us overtaking BC in the BCS (unless you believe BC is going undefeated at 13-0).
I dont know about that...OU is very low in the computer polls relative to us...anytime someone ahead of them loses, they move up where we cant go up very much more. The USCe, Cali, and Kentucky losses this week are already helping OU in the BCS rankings and not us. Even us beating Auburn tonight helps OU more than us because Auburn is ahead of OU in some of the computer polls, as crazy as that sounds. It will be interesting to see this thing play out. I just have to think we are in better position now than we were in 2003.
