1. Just curious: Does anybody know the reasoning behind ND's refusal to play in bowls from the 30s until the 60s?
  2. It had to do with academics. They thought the players missed too much time away from school to travel to bowl games.

    That all changed when they polls decided to crown the champ after the bowl games in the late 60s. Prior to that time, the champ was declared after the regular season and the bowl game was nothing more than a reward.

    Prior to 1969 ... we don't need to play in your crappy bowl since we're #1

    After 1969 ... we'd love to play in your crappy bowl if it means we are #1
