With the Hogs reeling after a 4-7 season, it may seem we've hit rock bottom, right? Wrong. With the signing of Springdale HS coach Gus Malzahn as Offensive Coordinater, the Razorbacks are looking up. Malzahn was signed soon after the nation's number 1 QB, Mitch Mustain (Also from Springdale HS) restarted the recruiting process after an oral commitment to Arkansas in August. If the Hogs can bring in Mustain, who knows Malzahn's offense like the back of his hand, there will be a drastic improvement next season. Even without him, Casey Dick could be a great QB if developed properly. Malzahn hopes to implement a spread offense but to also use Arkansas' running game featuring two sophomores, Darren McFadden and Felix Jones. Arkansas nearly knocked off LSU in Baton Rouge using Houston Nutt's grind-it-down-your-throat offense. Just think about what will happen next year in Little Rock with a new offensive system and an Offensive Coordinater for the first time under Houston Nutt's helm.
Dream on. I'm going to laugh my a$$ off when you are stuck with a HS coach for OC and still don't bag Mitch. Enjoy the off season because it's only going to get worse for you guys.
Even if we don't get Mitch, Malzahn is an offensive genius: He's written books on the spread offense, and even given lectures at other colleges. Although Mitch's talent would help, Casey Dick could be a good QB if Malzahn works with him. It would just help us in the short term if we bagged Mustain because of his knowledge of the spread.
Actually, we're gonna combine the spread with our running game. We're still gonna run the I formation, but we'll also throwing in a lot more passing plays. Malzahn says he wants it very balanced... Almost 50-50
Malzahn hopes to implement a spread offense. @ 7:47 pm He's written books on the spread offense, and even given lectures at other colleges. @ 8:31pm Well - is it the spread or the I formation? Almost 50-50 is pertty close to "very balanced". ************************************* Hog breath - On another thread -another sport we were discussing proven coaches. A HS coach stepping up to Offensive Coordinator (correct spelling) is a stretch. It can happen, but a stretch.
What's wrong with hiring a high school coach for OC? Nutt was the OC and HC, what does it hurt to have another set of eyes? I think when trying to attain greatness you have to be open to all possibilities. How will you feel if Arkansas's offense looks better than ours next year? At least Nutt is trying to do something different. The way our offense looked this year, we could probably use a little shaking up.
I would honestly feel pretty bad. I still think its a stretch to go from HS to OC. Time will tell.
