1. they'd probably give him the finger, you have too much faith in the student body. if they won't do it for the band, they wouldn't do it for anyone.

My grandmother had a saying while she was living, I didn't understand until I turned 35. She used to say, "Youth is wasted on the young"

Smart Ole woman my granny was.
  2. Looks like we found some middle ground that we can both agree on.

  3. What I see as being the problem is the same thing that fueled people during the 60s. It is them vs the man.

Now if the Coach and Football team made a public comment on the issue then it is no longer a struggle for so called power and control.
  4. OK, some perspective here.

    1. The world isn't going to end because Frank and Linda mandated the change--deal with it.

    2. The Golden Band from Tigerland is an official arm of Louisiana State University, and as such, its actions are considered University actions.

    3. From the perspective of an opposing fan, when a band plays a song and the entire student section chants the same thing, it is reasonable to conclude that the chant is led by the band. (I have written before about the aTm band using obscene gestures--the fact it means something else to them is lost on me because I am not an Aggie.)

    4. When the chants are considered obscene or profane, people will figure that Louisiana State University encourages obscene or profane cheers. To be exact, when the song was originally banned, the specific complaint, "the LSU Band led obscene cheers", appeared in the letters to the editor section of the Morning Advocate.

    5. It is the job of employees of Louisiana State University to enhance the image of the university. Allowing #4 to be true does not enhance the image of the university.

    6. Free speech is not an issue here. You can say whatever you want, any time you want and you will not go to jail--that is what the First Amendment guarantees. However, no one has to cow-tow to you just because you have the right to say something.

    7. While actions of students may reflect poorly on the University, LSU representatives may at least assert that such actions do not reflect the values of the University. For example, if you are too drunk at a game, you can get thown out.

    8. To open the decision to a popular vote of the student body or the members of Tiger Band would be to allow the inmates to run the assylum. I do not want Tiger Band to turn into Stunford's band. Tell me, do any other professors at LSU open their class rules to a vote of the students?

With all of these in mind, Frank and Linda have made the right decision.

    GEAUX TIGERS
  5. See that's just it, what you support and I support might not be what a small group of Nazi's support in THEIR coup. It all depends on where you stand as to which side you SEE as right. You made my point for me. You HOPE others would too. The majority... exactly. thanks

No but you do support LSU in some way don't you? Some people at Ole Miss have not supported them since the ban of the Old guy mascot. I know one VERY rich man here in Batesville who does not contribute anymore. So yes you do have a say in what goes on @ LSU, whether it be Mike the Tiger or the RAg, no matter how small that say may be, it matters. If EVERYONE decided it mattered, and it is likely many do, You can rest assured the Powers to be would pay attn, their paycheck depends on it.

Not really, you brought up the freedom of speech right, I just comapred it with the right to live. they are both rights afforded us by our Government and the good men who fought to obtain them. The corelation is a good valid one.

Don't kid yourself, there are limits to every right. Re-read what I said about individual rights on one end of the spectrum and society's rights on the other. You can't just claim Freedom of speech to be so sacred and beautiful that it runs rough shod over society's rights. Society has determined that you cannot just utter "anything" you want at anytime. You can't burst out in profanity at a Military funeral unless you have tourettes or something. It would get you arrested fast, regardless of what YOU as an individual believe SHOULD be allowed.

I don't know, but I'll say this. I hope so. I would hope that our student body and the LSU administration ALWAYS shows leadership where others lack it. I would hope that the institution would be considered a place where people would want to send their kids, because of the high standard LSU sets in leadership and as an example. Profanity of any type is generally not looked upon or held in high esteem. Indeed profanity is looked upon as an attempt of someone who "lacks" communication skills, but is trying to convey something. yes I've done it too. Probably will again. !
  6. If that is the case, if they did it for the good of LSU then why not stop the song back in the early 90s when they first brought it back? As soon as the song came back the @sshole came back. To me that seems to be alittle funny.

And according to the post before yours this was not vote, but MANDATED by someone in power.

We all just seem to be going around in circles with this, which I expected as with most debates here.

I will end my part in this thread with this.....purely my personal opinion....

They took something that was not an issue and turned into one. By doing so they have brought light of a negative subject on to Louisiana yet again, and the media will use every mean nessceary to exploit it.

Up until this year I personally have NEVER heard anyone complain about the fact that you can hear the words clear as day on the tv, and have so since the 90s.

It seems to me that the only reason this has become an issue is because of LSUs success in football in recent years, if it was not then they would have done this years ago.

I think this is dumb and will not work. 10 years from now if they bring Tiger Rag back I will put money on the fact that the @SSHOLE will be there in tune.

Like it or not this word is now and forever will be linked to this song.
  7. By age sixteen George Washington had written out his 110 Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior. From some of the post here I must conclude that Washington's viewpoint lacks relevance in today's world for many. His ideas did, however, serve him and our nation quite well.

    His first rule:

1stEvery Action done in Company, ought to be with Some Sign of Respect, to those that are Present.

  8. Ok, if you practice law then I bow down to your supperior knowledge of the law, lets see your J.D. Otherwise, I am going to tend to agree with the proffessors I have had who have practiced law in multiple court rooms in multiple states and venues and who have more knowledge of the law than what you just looked up in a book. Not all law comes from a book sir. "Assault with a deadly weapon" is a specific charge, just as "Assault" or "Assault and battery" is a specific charge. The one thing about law is that definitions of words change. I was merely pointing out that in this particular case, the threat would be assault and the action battery. In fact, interpretation of most law comes from precedents set in the court room. That being said, I am amazed that on a side comment on this discussion, you took the time to look up something that really has nothing to do with it.

  9. Unfortunately in todays world this simple concept is lost. We can only hope that sometime in the future these values are held in high esteem once again.
  10. This argument reminds me of my job.

    How, you say?

I am a technical sales representative for my company with for 27 years under my belt.

I set up my own calls, go where I want to (from San Jose to Monterey), am provided company car, gas, etc. and expense account, that I am encouraged to use rather liberally (golf, lunches, dinners, etc).

As long as my numbers are there, I'm good.

There are many that have gone through our company with some unrealistic ideals that lead to their ultimate failure.

They see all the perks but none of the pitfalls.

The same is true with personal freedoms.

I had heard a long time ago a saying that applies here.

"With great freedom comes great responsibility"
