I thought that was a little funny, too. He just said 'I will be the coach.' He did not say 'I will be the coach next year.'

Skip Bertman confirmed at 12:20 p.m. Saturday that LSU football coach Les Miles will not pursue the coaching position at Michigan and has agreed in principle to remain as the Tigers football coach.

“Les has already announced to the team that he’s staying and will announce to the media he’s staying,” Bertman said about a news conference scheduled for 12:50 p.m. Central time at the Georgia Dome, where the No. 5-ranked Tigers (10-2) will take on Tennessee (9-3) at 3 p.m. in the 2007 the SEC Championship Game.

“We don’t really have a contract signed and delivered, but we have an agreement in place with (LSU chancellor Sean O’Keefe). Les is happy and the players are happy, and of course he’s not going to talk to Michigan now.”

Board member Charles Weems of Alexandria also confirmed that Miles is staying and that Bo Pelini is leaving.

Weems said Miles never talked to Michigan and never had a deal with them.

"He always wanted to stay at LSU," Weems said, adding that the contract details should come from Bertman and O'Keefe.

It is a reasonable package that everyone is comfortable with, Weems said.

As for Pelini, "I think it's pretty clear and it's our idea that Bo will be the next coach at Nebraska," Weems said.

All of the ESPN reports this morning were very false and very distracting, he said.

Bertman said the agreement was reached early Friday before various news outlets released stories that Miles was bound for Michigan, his alma mater and a program he played for and twice coached with as an assistant.

“We didn’t want to detract from the game preparations by negotiating on Friday or Saturday, but it’s done,” Bertman said.

Securing Miles, whose 32-6 record is the best in a three-year period by any LSU coach, was important to Bertman.

“I feel real good about it,” he said. “I think people don’t realize how silly it is to assume that you can find a coach who can do better than Les has. Not only does he have the best three-year record in LSU history, he’s a good family man, he’s good with graduating players and he’s good with the kids.”

Miles and LSU are likely to rework his contract, which currently pays the coach $1.8 million annually. The maximum term is five years, but Bertman said he expects today’s announcement to be the start of a long-term relationship between Mile and the Tigers.

LSU Board Chairman Jerry Shea said "an agreement in principle" has been reached for Miles to stay at LSU. Shea would not discuss dollar figure.
