One guy on that thread is a complete moron. He said that Baton Rouge couldnt raise enough money to build a new elephant exhibit at the Baton Rouge Zoo and somehow linked LSU to the cause. Damn, LSU strikes again by donating money to build a nice habitat and the poor elephants suffer.:dis: :hihi:
According to one of my friends at the vet school they are either in talks with someone now, or they already acquired a 2 year old tiger. At least I think that's what she said.
The Reveille article says he will be cremated after the autopsy (which probably took place today) They are still debating weather or not to have a ceremony. I hope they do.
I dunno Red. This is PETA we're talking about. One can't expect them to consider the wisdom of their accusations regarding animal cruelty.
Wow. THat'd be neat. I've read also about random violence from Elephants on rare occasions. Would UofA be taking any greater risk than a zoo? R.I.P. Mike ol' buddy. See ya on the flipside.
The admin apparently thought it was too much of a risk. In zoos, they're usually isolated by moats, etc. Any wild animal carries some risk - including tigers...
It would be really dangerous to keep a lone elephant around. They are communal animals that share deep bonds. Most of the attacks by elephants are by elephants living lone lives or are by ones that are introduced to other elephants after years of solitary life. I saw a special about a shelter for retired circus elephants last night.
Elephant attacks are pretty common and they are increasing every year as they are pushed into smaller areas to live. I had no clue they kill 500 people a year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8y2BUj0QCIo
