I don't want to beat a dead horse, but from what I read, I think they "wanted" him, but the ineptitude of the UM AD resulted in the inability to bring him in. By the time they (UM) figured it out, it was too late - Miles was fully committed to LSU. Unlike some other coaches, I believe once CM made his TV rant before the SECCG, there was no way that UM was going to get him away.
It shows the national respect the UM program must have that they could run a coaching search as FUBAR as they did, yet still land Rich Rodriguez.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I think RR will light up the Big 10. If he can turn WVU into a winning program, he can win anywhere. You know it's not easy recruiting kids to WVU, which is probably why he had to take some questionable recruits. He won't have that problem at Michigan. He'll need to recruit a QB to fit his offense, but once he does, I think the spread offense will kill Big 10 defenses. We saw that with Illinois this year. Zook and RR may actually bring the Big 10 out of the dark ages and force them to recruit more speed. Much like Spurrier did in the SEC during the 90s.
I agree wholeheartedly with the spirit of this thread. Les Miles will become LSU's legendary coach. I hope more and more people will finally come around after he brings the crystal football to Baton Rouge. There has NEVER been a better time to be a Tiger fan, and Les Miles is a big part of that!
Two comments: 1. LSU has already demonstrated that they are willing to pay top dollar for top coordinators. Jimbo, Bo, and Gary Crowton all received $400,000+ grand. 2. LSU has already announced season ticket price increases for next season.
I think some people wanted Miles but the person or people making the call did not. This was a very big hire for that program and if Miles is who they wanted I don't care how inept the process was they would have got him.
I doubt we'll ever know the truth but I just see this as Herb wanting to be the lead guy to break the story, not with an undermining agenda. Agents may have been talking in the background and Herb went with his source and got burned. I believe Miles' side of the story that the formal discussions never reached the level where he was having conversations with Michigan. Miles has shown his integrity. It has all been proven true even with continuing speculation and I, for one, believe his side. I think we have a damn strong football coach.
I don't think you're in the minority at all. RR is the perfect coach for UM. I think you're going to see a huge change in the way offenses operate in the Big10. Zook and RR are going to rule the conference in a few years. Big and slow will be supplanted with spread and speed. It's a winning combination. One that the vest will be losing a lot of sleep over starting tonight.
That's what I'm talking about. Since the time we first hired Miles, I believed he would become "LSU's legendary coach." Even if we lose this game against OSU, I'll still believe Miles is on track to be "LSU's legendary coach."
I strongly disagree. I think think Miles was who they wanted, but the process was inept. Things don't always work out perfect in this world. Think of all the times the best person for the best position doesn't get there because of an inept process. The Michigan fan base was in an uproar when Michigan didn't get Miles. I wonder how they feel now that they have Rodriguez.
