I'm not aware of any official University document or proclamation that establishes, as a matter of fact, that the athletic teams are named after Civil War units.

I understand that legend has it that this is the case, but, until someone can produce an official document or proclamation, the connection will remain legendary and anecdotal.

The name, "Tar Heels," is of Civil War origin so there is certainly a possibilty that, "Tigers," might be connected as well.

Sounds like tailgating on a crisp Saturday morning with Auburn fans walking in our sights.

I saw a book in Barnes & Noble's the other day with the same title as this thread, "Lee's Tiger's"...

If I'm not mistaken, Jean Lafitte, Raphael Semmes, which snakes its way through the heart of LSU's campus as one of its major thoroughfares, is actually anmed for a high ranking soldier in the outfit...So, the Tiger moniker is probably a little bit more than anecdotal...

Admiral Semmes was not a Louisiana Tiger.
