And unless you like donuts, stay away from Meche's. Their king cakes are just giant glazed donuts.

They don't get any better than Gambino's....are they still around after Katrina? If so, I'm ordering one.

I'm making 2 today, 1 chocolate. Couldn't find a good one here so I decided I'd have to learn to make 'em myself. With the help of a bread machine, they come out pretty nice. I was surprised to find mardi gras-colored decorative icing in the local HEB. Now, if I just had some fresh pecans from Bergeron's and a plastic African American baby for the chocolate one.....

    I don't take orders. :nope:

    YES THEY ARE! :)

Thanks for all of the suggestions! The Pauls Pastry cake looks kinda weird.

I'm going w/ either Gambino's or Rouse's. Actually, I'll probably order from both. Randazzo's does look good, but not exactly what I had in mind. I'm not ruling them out though, because king cakes seem to be like Lay's potato chips.

I generally order from Gambino's although I have just made them myself at times in the past.

I think that either today or tomorrow I will make a few. One for us, one for my husband to take to work, and one to take to the vet and his staff.

I started making King Cakes today. Making two today, will make a couple tomorrow, and one on Wed. (One for us, one for the vet, a couple for my husband to take to work, and one for the guys at the firestation I make goodies for.)

Anyway, I got out one of my Southern Living cookbooks that has the KC recipe in it that I like. I then thought I would check out the FoodTV web site to see what their recipes looked like. I was reading an emeril recipe when I thought, this looks familiar. It is the exact recipe that is in my SL cookbook! I have had the cookbook for 21 years, and the FTV site has a copyright date of 2003 on the recipe. (I am not as ancient as it sounds, I started collecting cookbooks when I was 13!!) The written directions are a bit different, but the same idea with the exact same ingredients, down to the little bit of nutmeg in the dough!

A little time has passed, maybe some of the old favorites are back? Where should I order a cake and what do you suggest? I also want to buy a couple for my kid's school class.
