Has Jimbo said if ED was the primary receiver and that was the route that was called for? It looked like JR followed ED the whole time and waited for him to come open. I would have to think he meant to get it to him on a quicker deep slant but couldn't because of the coverage. Looks like ED just kept running across when he got deep. If the play was called that deep, it was really gutsy on 4th and 10.
JR said that the play was improvised after he rolled out of the pocket. He said he felt pressure so he rolled out, made eye contact with Early, let him get out in front of the D and let it fly. He said that it was basically a scramble drill after he was out of the pocket.
Early Doucet said that they have been practicing scrambling for when a play breaks down & he took that in mind & ran a route to the deep corner after he saw JaMarcus flushed from the pocket in order to get open. Russell said that the play was only designed to get a first down but that he went for it when he saw Doucet open. I don't remember any other receivers open that he could have thrown it too, do ya'll??
You're right. I don't think there's ever a play for the QB to roll right, then back left by design. That TD pass was the byproduct of both QB and WR doing what you're supposed to do--keep moving and keep reading the defense.
that is the great thing about having such fast athletes at WR.. they can make things like this play happen... I mean, the guy was double covered, but his raw athletic ability allowed him to get ahead of the defenders.. has ASU been running that play, and the same situation occured, the ASU wideouts would not have been able to outrun an LSU defender.. all of their open plays were from schemes and great route running
