Bingo. Jimbo is the highest paid assistant coach in the country and he has turned down two head coaching offers already. Clearly he's waiting for the right one, Delaware was too small and Miss State is a coaches graveyard. But Free Shoes University is a major player, in state that is lousy with blue-chip recruits. A chance to be head coach would be an offer he couldn't refuse and paying some dues as OC first would be no big deal. But if FSU is just looking to hire Jimbo away from LSU with no head coach deal, it will be a hard sell. Jimbo is better off staying at LSU at a half-million a year until the job he wants comes along. He won't be making any entangling commitments for a lateral move. What Jimbo really wants is to be head coach at LSU or Auburn.
I hesitate to bring this up (b/c I have no clue if it is correct and this is the only instance of hearing about it) but since its relevant to this thread I will. Last Friday I attended a TAF luncheon in Lafayette where the guest speaker was Mike Scarborough. Jimbeaux's name came up and Mike said he had heard that Jimbeaux was interested in the OC job @ Alabama. He was questioned re why Jimbezux would want to make a lateral move to a struggling program. Other additional reasons were given but Mike said that it is no secret that Jimbeaux and Miles don't always see "eye (of the tiger) to eye (of the tiger)". Mike reminded everyone that when Miles first came to LSU he basically wanted to be the OC and in addition would hire a QB coach. He offered that as an example of how involved LM wanted to and probably is involved in the offense. Whereas NS and Jimbeaux may have not gotten along, Nick's specialty was defenes. Is this case Miles is an offensive guy (actually I think he's pretty nice !) and maybe b/c of this any disagreements b/w them are bigger problems. Who knows what the deal is. We are all trading on second and third hand information. I personally hope that Jimbeaux stays. Sometimes his play calling is too conservative or predictable for some but every QB, IMHO, at LSU under him has gotter better EACH year.
When the rumor started about Auburn DC Chizak making a lateral move to Texas a couple of years ago, there were similar posts from Auburn fans as I see here from some of you. But he went. Money talks.
If that's true, then Jimbo won't be making a lateral move anytime soon. He makes $500,000. Baby Bowden was making $141,000. That would be one helluva increase for FSU to match Jimbo's salary.
Jimbo is one of the highest paid coordinators in the country, and he has a lot of talent here. There are reasons he may make a move though. For one, there is the speculation (which is all it is) that Miles is too involved in the offense & Jimbo and he don't get along. Secondly, he could move to be OC at a school where he could have a good chance to replace the head coach. Thirdly, he could move to a school with a struggling offense & turn it around in order to further prove himself as a head coach candidate. Bama & Florida St could work for all of these scenarios. So will Jimbo go? I don't think so, but it is a possability. Personally, I hope he stays but if he choses to go, I really hope that Miles doesn't chose to not bring in a new OC.
But could he tolerate Miles for an extra $350,000 or so? That's the difference in pay between the two jobs. It's a stretch to think FSU would match his salary. I can't see him taking a paycut to get away from Miles.
Any top-notch coordinator is going to butt heads with his head coach from time to time. Jimbo and Nick butted heads all the way to a national championship. You don't want your coordinators to be ass-kissers.
I agree. It would make no sense to go from a top 10 team capable of winning it all next year to a struggling team for what would be a lateral move. If Jimbo leaves Tigertown, he will not do so unless it is for a head coaching position
He wouldn't take it just to get away from Miles, but that could be an extra perk and weigh on his decision if either of the latter two I mentioned are presented.
