We all agree that JR has a strong enough arm to play QB. You also have to be mentally tough, which for the most part, he is! JR looks better than he did last year, although, he has only had 1 game against a tough defensein 2006. As the season progresses, I see him getting more comfortable. To bad we didn't play Auburn towards the end of the season..... :geauxtige :geauxtige :geauxtige :geauxtige
I could write a book about Russel but it's a no no around here. 1. He doesn't read the Defense well. he reacts to it AFTER the play has begun, good QB's decide and Dictate what the play will be, if he needs to check off etc.. He just gets himself out of trouble with his arm strength half the time. he is playing "sand lot" football. Improvision is his calling card. 2. he "advertises" his hand offs. From the upper deck you can see it, its obvious. QB's are taught to have some "stealth" on fakes and ball handling. A QB is not just a passer, he starts the play and is largely responsible for making the Defense "guess" where the play is going. A half second of time can mean alot in a defender's steps if he "loses" where the ball is. that hesitation can "seal" him for that split second it takes to make the hole stick or the wide out open. There is no such thing when Russel handles the ball. My blind granny can see where the play is going... truthfully. 3. he still doesn't look at the second receiver. he waits until he is in trouble then it's the first open guy he sees. He has NO problem getting the ball in the vicinity of the Wide out due to arm strength. You can flame me if you want, but he won't start in the NFL unless someone grooms him. and please don't say he is inexperienced or post his win lose record. Hell the win lose record is not even a point, you might do EVEN better with someone else, you have no way of knowing. Everyone around here thinks he is a great QB, on this forum I mean. They are going to be suprised when he doesn't play long in the NFL if at all. He just doesn't have those intangible skills. That's not to say he can't get them, but he sure hasn't made any improvements that I've seen. You can get away with "sand lot" football and a strong arm in HS and for a year or so in college, after that, it's time to develop. Naturally, i wish the guy the best though, and I think we can win with him at the helm, of course I want that. He's good enough to do that, but I have no illusions as some of you do here about Hiesmans or "greatness". If he turns out to be the second Joe Montana, I'll be glad to eat crow, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it. Just my opinion, I know it's wrong LOL yeah right ... :dis:
Yeah, Flynn looked much better throwing 3 ball into the dirt. You people are ridiculous. You better hope Russell comes back next year. We might start No.1.
I can blow this theory out of the water with one name, but I'll give you two. Brett Farve, what kind of teams did he play agaisnt in college? he played for USM BTW. different position. Jerry Rice, played for Mississippi Valley, what kind of BIG SEC defense did he play agaisnt? No JR isn't perfect, in fact he is a long way from it. And yes he is good enough probably the best we have. We can do fine with him. So what's my point? it's this, he isn't nearly as good as he COULD be or as good as he was touted. He has a wonderful arm, I'd love to see him break records and win a Hiesman, that would be so cool for him and LSU. I guess for me the point is that it is hard to swallow the fact that the guy is so close, yet so far. Maybe I judge him too harshly, sure there is time to develop, he is only a Junior. The thing is Time keeps going by, it doesn't wait. If he wants that brass ring, there is no time like the Present.
And neither is JS or his granny. You make some good points but you make some bad ones, too. By your criteria LSU has not had a good quarterback since Bert Jones.
JS and his granny aren't QB's for LSU or anyone else. Red, I don't have a "criteria" I was just making an observation. and IF what you say is true, then we, LSU recruiting should try to do even better than they have. No matter how good you are, you should strive for better, this is how greatness is acheived.
One thing I noticed about Jamarcus Russell.....is that he is AWESOME!!!!!!!!! LSU! LSU! LSU! LSU!
I must be missing your point. How does mentioning either of these guys "blow this theory out of the water" ?? Neither of them played in the SEC, and both are offensive players. I don't get it. My post was about how good the defenses that JR is facing are. I'm all for the discussion, but could you explain what you meant by this?
JaMarcus is the worst NCAA quarterback of all time, because Paul Bear Bryant said so. He's still alive, apparently.
