In the aftermath of giving up 461 yards passing vs ASU, I thought I would research the last time we gave up that many yards thru the air, and to whom, and provide some other tidbits of information to go along with it. Here's what I came up with: The last opponent to throw for over 450 yards vs the Tigers was Rex Grossman (threw for 464 in 2001, in Death Valley no less  ). In that game (during Saban's 2nd year as coach), we were ranked #18 and the Gators were ranked #2. Florida won 44-15. That loss knocked us from the rankings and we did not re-enter the top 25 until after beating #24 Arkansas on Nov. 23rd (followed by wins vs Auburn, Tennessee in the SEC Championship game, and Illinois in the Sugar Bowl). So, if we remember, we entered that game vs Florida in the wake of a loss to Tennessee 18-26 and encountered another loss to Ole Miss 24-35 later in the year. Yet, we still managed to go to a BCS bowl....which promps me to beleive that the sky is indeed NOT falling just because we got shreadded in the air and looked horrible on defense in our first game. Even "The Defensive Master" Nick Saban couldn't stop a pass-happy offense from putting up huge numbers--again, in Tiger Stadium! of all places--let alone in a venue where we were the visitor (forget the whole "it's LSU's home game" crap....the only thing a visiting team has is the coin toss and even that's 50/50). I guess I'm starting to settle down a bit. After being as angry as a hornet with Pellini and the defense, I'm rethinking that maybe I should reserve my notion of "fire Bo Pellini" until after a few more games because after looking at the results from Saban's first few seasons, his defense actually didn't get dominant until his 3rd year. Granted, he didn't have the personel that Pellini is walking into, but the point is that it still took Saban's players a good two seasons to start showing dominance, and proving that the defensive scheme was working. We're asking Pellini to do it in his first game--against an offensive system that we, more than likely, won't be seeing much of in conference--except for Florida....oddly enough the last team prior to Arizona State, to top 460 yards passing on us. After one week, 2005 is shapping up just like 2001. Except that I highly doubt Ole Miss will beat us like they did in '01. Personally, who wouldn't want another SEC championship season like 2001??? Certainly our eyes are set on the bigger prize, which we're still very capable of reaching--especially since we are sitting mighty pretty at #3 in the nation after only 1 game. :thumb:
make real time adjustments to what the Offense is doing..... This team is only going to get better.... :geauxtige
Heck, midway thru the 4th quarter I THOUGHT it was coming to an end!!! My mood was: 1st quarter  2nd quarter  3rd quarter :dis:  4th quarter :cuss: :angryfire :bncry: :thumb:   o: :sob:  :thumb: :thumb: :laflagwav
I was reading all of the Saturday night and Sunday morning posts and couldn't believe how angry a lot of people were. Rather than jump all over those I disagreed with, I realized that they were either/or drunk, shocked, scared (at how close we came to losing), etc so I decided to let things settle down before getting into "debates". Usually by Tuesday or Wednesday, things are a bit clearer and better discussion can ensue. I see now that cooler heads do prevail (for the most part). I think it's telling that LSU's stature in the polls was not diminished by a win over a ranked opponent, regardless of whether all facets of the game were clicking on all cylinders. It's the rare team that can play all facets (offense, defense, special teams) at peak performance for 12 games. To play poorly on defense and still get the win speaks volumes. There will be games this year when the offense is off and the defense will save the day. Save the "fire the coach" rants until we know what we've got. To think I'd live to see the day that we would be undefeated and 3rd in the country and the fans are doing nothing but poor mouthing. :dis:
We win on the road against a ranked opponent! should be the end of discussion! Bo will be FINE... the guy can coach... Maybe did you guys just think that Arizona St. might possibly be good?! Did that ever occur to any of you?
Imagine what Nebraska fans were doing following their '98 game vs La Tech where Rattay put up 560 yards passing!!!!!!
