Personally, I have never claimed 12 national titles for Alabama.

That's a good read there. It helps with a lot of the ideas people have.
However, I know the NCAA does not weigh any one poll more or less than the other... hence why Alabama, in theory, could claim as many as, last I saw, 23. They don't, however. My understanding has always been that certain polls were selected by them, Notre Dame, and others, to be the criteria for selecting national championships.
We were selected with two losses by one poll in 1941 (or 45, can't remember which right now). That was one of the polls agreed upon... but I think after that year, or shortly thereafter, it was agreed to not recognize it anymore.
*MY* point is that a lot of the article tried to debunk titles awarded in the 60's because of Alabama losing their bowl games... ignoring the fact that for the longest time, bowl games were considered exhibition matches, though still played for respect. They were not considered part of the season, and therefore had no bearing on the national title. This thinking shifted over the years.
Trying to twist my words to imply Florida should not have won the NC this year is absurd. The agreed upon format is that the title is awarded after the BCS game. The agreed upon format back in the early 60s was that it was awarded the before the bowl games.
If they changed the Heisman to be awarded after the bowl games, would that nullify all the players who won it before the bowl game then had a poor performance in their bowl game? We all know those people aren't going to have their trophies taken from them, so why all the uproar to have teams' trophies taken from them?
The simple fact of the matter is this:
Someone wants Alabama to not claim 12 titles. Understandable.
Someone says that only the AP and UPI titles should be claimed. Understandable.
Someone says that the AP and UPI titles awarded before bowl games should *NOT* be counted. Why? Because it helps their arguement without any sane reasoning behind it?
The point of the matter is that Alabama can claim 7 or they can claim 12. I usually accept 11 or 7, end of story.
No matter how you cut it, Alabama has more than any SEC school. Heck, they have more than any 3 SEC schools combined.
Does the AP somehow gain credibility by having 8-2 Minnesota, loser of their bowl game, as National Championship winners in 1960?
