Actually, the movie was based on a novel by Frank Deford about a North Carolina player. UNC didn't want to have the filming there, so the producers moved the whole story to South Louisiana. Billy Cannon thought about suing, but the film was too far off his life story to have a case. (Remember, Dennis Quaid doesn't become a counterfeiter.)

I was in Tiger Band at the time and we had to pretend that the school was Louisiana University. I am in the opening scenes--I remember filming all night.

Good Memories. No, it wasn't that long ago.

And the book is great too!! Gavin Grey is a fictional character and not based on anyone in particular.
