I listened to an interview with Doug Williams driving into work this morning on ESPN Radio. More important than Coach Robinson's on the field achievements was the lasting impression he made on his players and everone else he came into contact with. The word "can't" was not in his vocabulary. Truly a legend who should be mentioned in the same breath as Bryant, Paterno, Bowden, et al.
Another one of the "great ones" is gone. My dad met him many times and had the highest respect for Coach Robinson (a number of my dad's high school players played for him). Rest in heavenly peace, Coach. We will miss you.
There comes a time to pay tribute. Once in a great length of time we get a chance to view or even experience someone's life that actually has an impact on people we know, or read about, or just respect because of their accomplishments on the athletic field. Being an averge white guy, it's extremely hard to understand how "an old black coach" has an impact on the sports I love with all my heart. I've watched with amazement over my lifetime how Coach Robinson amassed an amazing amount of accomplishments during my lifetime, much less his own. I'm not sure how many sportsfans know how many dominant athletes went through Mr. Robinson's world on the way to superstardom in the NFL, but the numbers are awesome. This man has had an unbelievable impact on the world of sports in ways that will never be understood except by the athletes that were impacted by him personally. I certainly hope the Great State of Louisiana acknowledges the accomplishments this man attained within the confines of the state of Louisiana.
