The final score of that game is reason enough to never elect to kickoff in OT in the NFL. Regardless of the weather.
Jamie Howard had Auburn beaten on the road but then lost it when he threw four fourth-quarter interceptions--all using the same play, all of which were returned for touchdowns. The second, third, and fourth interceptions were the three dumbest plays in LSU history.
They sure looked like good calls from where I was sitting. It was like they were trying to fulfill the old adage "if at first you don't succeed, try and try 'till you do succeed."
Haslett using two timeouts at the same time. Quite a feat. He challenged a play then used a timeout?! something like that.
when there's at least a 10 yard head wind it has been proven statistically its best to kick. your probability of winning is .48 if you dont, making it less than half (since kickoffs have been moved to the 30 yard line in 1994). With little to no wind, if you elect to receive in OT you have a probablility .64 meaning 64% chance of winning. A wind of this strength affects field goals, punts, and kickoffs. subtract 10 going into it on punts and kicks and add about 2-3 kicking and punting with it. its ok to use that chicago game to rationalize your decisions, its just you'd be statistically wrong. if you're marty mornhinwheg, you do what is the perceived best thing to do and receive if you want to keep your job regardless the outcome.
Is that Leon Lett? If so, he was involved in another dumb play. My memory is a little fuzzy on the details. It was a Thanksgiving game against the Dolphins years ago when it snowed in Dallas. The Cowboys blocked a kick and Lett instead of getting away from it, tried to cover it and eventually cost the Cowboys the game as I recall.
Ahhh, how could I forget that one. They blocked a field goal and Leon decided to jump on the ball, but since it was in the snow he missed it, touching it.. The Dolphins recovered it and I think kicked a field goal the next play and won the game.
Somewhere between 1973 and 1978, Ole Miss was playing Fla. (I think in Fla) OM was leading late in the game. Maybe 25/30 secs. left. Fla. was driving fairly easily. Already close enough to score. FG wins it. The Fla. qb needed a timeout and threw the ball out of bounds to stop the clock. ONE PROBLEM-----It was fourth down. I may be wrong, but I think that young qb was Spurrier.
