It should come as no surprise that the NCAA mandates helmets be the same color. From the NCAA rule book: RULE 1-4/THE GAME, FIELD, PLAYERS AND EQUIPMENT Players of a team shall wear helmets of the same color and design, and facemasks of the same color.

As mentioned here, tension between Croom and his alma mater is hardly new. From a 2003 article right after Bama hired Mike Shula: Do I believe Bama would be winners if Croom was the coach? Damn right I do, and I'm sure that he knew it, too. Lost scholarships and probations aside, Alabama will always win when at full strength, and a Coach Croom as the first and only Af-American HC in the SEC woulda snagged a few extra blue chippers that would have gone elsewhere w/o Croom being in charge at 'Bama. Dude, you saw how Ty Willingham got pimped when he was winning at Notre Dame; Croom would have been similarly blessed, and surely that's got to be eating at him still to this day.
