I just thought i might make mention of a little issue some of "us" here don't seem to be considering. anotherwords I'm going to clue you in.

while it is NOBLE to go after a coach that "bleeds" purple and gold, this just isn't very likey unless someone can resurrect Charlie Mac. As far as I can tell he was the last really GREAT coach that was dyed in the wool LSU.

The catch 22 ( paradox if you will ) is this: If the Admin hires a GREAT coach, the NFL owners will always have an eye on him, to some extent. To what extent that will be largely depends on his sucess.

If the Admin hires a coach that the NFL owners have no interest in whateso ever, for whatever reason, then it's a sure bet he isn't a producer of W's in the win column.

5 years is not a BAD tenure for any coach. If we get as good a coach as Saban was for 2-3 years we should be so lucky.

I guess Spurrier and Carroll are the exceptions?

There are actually quite a few other coaches out there that win and do very well in the college ranks but didn't do so hot in the NFL.

1 more I'm not sure about, John Robinson?

Carroll I'll agree with but Spurrier hasn't done that yet.

And Carroll owes alot of his success to USC's conference and the recruiting.

    but that's another story.

I'm not saying Spurrier wont do great, but it remains to be seen. I'm sorta doubting it to be honest with you.

Sure there are exceptions to everything, but do you REALLy want a washed up NFL coach that USED to be a good college coach? Everybody is hanging their hat on Spurrier being great once again in college F ball but do you KNOW that is going to happen? What has he done lately? LOSE

    People's memories are too short.

Look, Saban really thought long and hard about the decision before making it. He is a bit of a jerk, an ego maniac, and a great football coach. He contacted LSU, because the man knew LSU was a plcae where he could accomplish one of his 2 biggest career goals: Win an MNC. Mission Accomplished.

Now, Miami (and every NFL team with a head coaching opening the last 3 years) called Saban to woo him. Nick and his family were actually torn about this deal, so Huizenga had to fly here on Christmas Eve to sway him. The Miami deal is just too good. It is every head coach's NFL dream (great owner, great city, winning tradition, total control, huge money). Again, Saban wants the second of his 2 biggest career goals: Win a Super Bowl.

Thank Nick Saban for making LSU reach its potential. Feel grateful as a Tiger fan that he saved the program. And, have faith that a wise man like Skip Bertman will end up hiring a great coach to replace him.

Hint: If Butch Davis wants the job, he will get it. And, we will be lucky once again.

Alley Broussard is pretty hard to catch. I'd rather let someone else catch him.

No offense meant but Saban USED to be a damn good NFL assistant and he was out of the pros longer than BD was out of college.

Does this mean you think Saban will flounder in the NFL? If you posted on this I apologize in advance but I don't read every single post here.

No i have no way of knowing how Saban will do in the Pro's. My guess is he could do quite well.

My original observation is true. It's the basic supply and demand issue. If you're good at what you do, whether college or pro, you'll be in demand. if not you won't be. Pro teams generally have more cash to throw at a coach, so they would generally be able to get the best coachs.

Somewhat true, however I ask is it just dumb luck that other schools have pretty good coaches who dont interview for every NFL job that comes open (OU, FSU, Ohio State, Miami Canes, Va Tech, Michigan)
Those are just a few schools who have accomplished almost and in some cases more where they have a coach who at this point has NO interest in leaving their schools. I dont recall Stoops talking to every NFL team, and he has been to 3 out 5 National title games with 1 win and another forthcoming. You would figure the NFL would be going after him like no mans business.

I guess my point, there is some validity to your comments, however there are plenty of schools and coaches that have a long team coach that dont have their agent burning up fax machines with Resumes, many of them have the very same agent.
It is possible that LSU can find its Bob Stoops or Lloyd Carr.
I think LSU fans at this point would be happy to have a good coach who wants to be here and does bleed purple and gold, and least starts getting daily transfusions of it, and realize it doesn’t get any better then the SEC and Saturday night in Death Valley...

LSU is a top notch program, who will pay good money. There are coaches like Stoops who believe that College Football is what they want to do, with Salaries the way they are, we can find a good long term coach. Saban has built a premier program here, most of our coaches were fired or quit.
Times have changed at LSU and in college Ball. I hope we find our Stoops or Bowden.
You are probably right we will get another 5 year coach. BUT my point is many premier programs like Va Tech and Michigan which are no better then LSU DO have a long term coach who always has them in the fight.
Stoops is a text book example and although Stoops got beat by Saban if you put the careers next to each other. Stoops has Saban beat. More National Titles (Assuming he wins this year) 2 out 5 title games, and dominates a pretty good conference. Same agent...
I am sure Skip and our seach committee will realize that LSU fans have grown very weary of the Saban to the NFL rumors every year, that now in hindsight seem to have proven Saban was simply waiting for what he wanted, the problem is the Bears, Indy, Jax, Atlanta did not bring it. Had they came with the offer Saban was soliciting, we would have had this conversation last year or the year before.

And thats the natural order of things. Nowadays the only thing people are true to is themselves and the money. Or in Ricky williams case himself and the weed. Thats the price you have to pay for having a succesful team in the college ranks. If "The Visor" has a couple of good years with S.C. you don't think that some NFL owner will give him another shot. Maybe it was management maybe it was personally whatever the case he will, if he wants it, get another shot at coaching in the pros.

So the qustion you have to ask is would you SETTLE for a coach that has ok years every now and then gets to the SECC but will stay for 10 to 15 years.

    Or
A great coach that brings us to the promise land again and again but leaves after 4 years for bigger and greener hills.

The days of the coach staying to coach the school that he loves are dying and will be put out will FSU is Bowdenless, as much as a i hate him and FSU he has stayed true to those fans through thick and thin and you will never see that happen again.

But what the hell do I know.

People should remember that not every NFL coach goes to the college ranks and becomes great.

I think people automatically think NFL=College Success
