CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- As Demarcus Cousins took his seat next to XavierHenry late Tuesday morning at the media day for the McDonald's All-American game, he looked at his potential future teammate and smiled. "I'm here for you, X," Cousins said.
Cousins, a 6-foot-11 center, and Henry, a 6-6 wing, had planned to play together at Memphis. Now, as Tigers coach John Calipari ponders a move to Kentucky, the players find themselves in limbo. Cousins, who has not signed a letter-of-intent, said he would reopen his recruitment if Calipari leaves. Henry, meanwhile, said he has a written agreement with Memphis that requires the school to release him from his letter-of-intent if Calipari leaves. "I can go anywhere," Henry said. "It just reopens my recruitment. If he did leave, I'd have to reopen everything."
Henry's parents both played basketball at Kansas. His brother, C.J., plays for Memphis. Xavier Henry said he hadn't spoken to his brother since before Calipari's meeting with Memphis players on Monday.
Cousins, who had previously committed to Alabama-Birmingham, does not need to cut through any red tape if he chooses to follow Calipari, but Cousins said he also would consider all his options. Cousins said he spoke to Calipari on Tuesday morning, but the coach didn't offer any hints about his plans.
