Does anybody think that today's game will decide the best NCAA football conference for decades to come? There will probably never be another Big Ten vs. SEC NC for a very long time. Whoever wins this game will have braggin rights for their conference for a few years. GO BIG TEN!
No, I don't think so at all. It is obvious that both teams are very dominating, and that the conferences are two of the best. But that this game decides the power shift for years to come? Not at all. Besides, we all know who's going to win, 7 point underdog or no.
no cuz i think florida sucks on average in comparison. If UF wins I will think OSU is highly overrated. Just not impressed with UF but I am with OSU. other than that I think little of the rest of your conference in comparison. Yes, I am aware of the bowls.
The sec leads the big ten in head to head matchups. So I would put more weight into that as compared to just one game. I still think the buckeyes win tonight.
Who has OSU played besides UT and UM that makes them look so impressive? They didn't even play the second best team in their conference IMO (Wisconsin). Florida has some luck this year but they also played a tougher schedule and an extra game and still only have one loss. Hard to argue with that. I think that OSU has been overrated all year. I think that tonight we might see as much. Today I'm a Gator fan.
I'm also leaning in this direction--much like I had my suspicions about Michigan because they gained their reputation this season largely on that whippin' put on ND. I wasn't that impressed. I'm very interested to see how tonight plays out, and of course, I'm pulling for the SEC.
Well, Ohio St has lost their last 8 bowl games vs the SEC. The SEC has 6 teams in the top 20 in bowl winning percentage while the Big 10 has 2. We won't look at most bowl appearances or wins since the Big 10 had some bans along the way. The big ten holds an advantage in all time head to head matchups. One seaon or especially one game won't mean that much except to show the Big 10's bowl teams were better this year evidentally.
Nope. Just Ohio State versus Florida in 2007. This year's OSU team is the best team to come out of the Big-10 in decades while this Florida team, while good, is not the best SEC team in this decade, it ain't even in the top 3. Ohio State should be a huge favorite and deservedly so. And they are overdue for one since Ohio State has never won a bowl game versus an SEC team. Ohio State is 7-7-2 all time for the SEC but 0-7 in bowl games. 0-3 vs Alabama 0-1-1 vs Auburn 0-1 vs Georgia 3-0 vs Kentucky 1-0-1 vs LSU 0-1 vs Tennessee 3-1 vs Vanderbilt
I think the Big 10 and SEC have shown to be the best 2 conferences. I would give the edge to SEC because of the amount of good teams they have on the West and especially the East side of the conference. With UF playing LSU every year and alternating UT and UGA on other years, you have to play all the West teams and typically the best 2 teams of the East division. Because of the scheduling system the top SEC teams play 4 games minimum where the opponent is in the Top 25 and occassionally the top 15. Because there are so many good teams in the SEC, that is why it is the best conference. Now comparing teams individually, then the Big 10 draws close because you can compare OSU or UM to individual teams like Tenn, UF, LSU, AU. They compare well to those teams but make OSU and UM play UF, LSU, AU, UT, and ARKy they will not be undefeated. OSU had a couple of hard games and didn't have to play Wisconsin. They couldn't make it through the SEC week in and week out.
I guess there's some value in looking at the past.... not much, but some... Based on the info at espn, which goes back five years, here's some stats on both the Big Ten and SEC: Data over the past five years based on how each conference did against (a) other BCS teams and conferences; (b) against teams who were ranked when they played them; and (c) bowl records. The SEC (12 teams), over the past five years including all games this year, have played 106 games against other BCS leagues and Notre Dame. They are 52-54. The Big Ten (11 teams) has played 119 games against teams from other BCS leagues. They are 65-54 in those games. The SEC is 20-29 when playing out of conference ranked teams. The Big Ten is 19-26. The SEC is 19-15 in their bowl games. The Big Ten is 17-16. In games versus other BCS conferences (including ND) the SEC is 8-10 versus the Big Ten; 6-6 versus the Pac 10; 20-20 versus the ACC; 9-10 versus the Big 12; 8-6 versus the Big East; and 1-2 versus Notre Dame. The Big Ten is 10-8 versus the SEC; 11-16 versus the Pac 10; 10-5 versus the ACC; 11-11 versus the Big 12; 16-4 versus the Big East; and 7-10 versus Notre Dame. In the SEC, it's Georgia who has kicked butt... they are 12-1 versus other BCS leagues, 4-1 in their bowl games, and 5-1 versus ranked opponents. In the Big Ten, it's tOSU. The Buckies are 13-1 versus other BCS teams, 4-0 in bowls, and 5-1 versus ranked opponents. So much for stats... Both teams have talent, good coaches to prepare them, and much to play for... I expect a good game. I would think tOSU has a maturity factor going for them... and Florida gets all the benefits of the underdog and proving they belong. tOSU's offensive line has both protected Troy Smith and worn opponents down as the games have progressed.... that may be the difference. Florida will need the kind of "breaks" they've been getting all year to win the game.
