Ok so i was just at home during my lunch break. I saw something on the ESPN news crawl/ticker that said something to the effect of the BCS playing one game a week after the other 4 games (since they're adding a 5th) to determine the national champion. it scrolled by really fast so i didn't get all the details. ESPN has nothing about it on their website (strangely enough). it wasn't clear if it meant that the 2 teams playing in that bowl would be the remaining #'s 1 & 2 after the other 4 games had been played or not. but the wording made it sound sort of playoff-ish. anyone else see this, or have any info on it?

yeah I saw it but didn't post it because it wasn't on the site. it said that 2 teams would play afterwards to determine the national champion. I assuming this would be the plus one system which would be the best way.

I didn't see it, but I think they are referring to the new BCS agreement with Fox where they added a 5th BCS bowl game. It's not a playoff or a plus one system ... just a 5th BCS bowl game to make more money. They announced that the Fiesta Bowl will host the first championship game under this new agreement.

I assume that's what they are talking about...

In the words of the devil (aka Lee Corso): "Not so fast, my friend."

There is simply an extra BCS game that is simply called the BCS Championship Game.

    http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/fb/fbc/3155634

    An excerpt:

    "
PHOENIX - The Fiesta Bowl organization was awarded the first national college football championship game under the new, expanded Bowl Championship Series format on Tuesday, and the BCS schools worked to find a new poll to help select the teams that will play for the title.

Beginning in the 2006 season, there will be a new game to determine the BCS national champion, a contest separate from the four existing BCS bowls — the Fiesta, Orange, Sugar and Rose. In essence, it means that two more schools will qualify for a BCS contest.

As in the current system, the teams that finish first and second in the BCS will play for the championship."

A lot of headlines have been misleading about that. It’s just the ‘double hosting’ or ‘piggyback game’ they came up with last June that they are talking about.

All this does is opens the door for more "Championship" rings (see Auburn).

It makes the BCS games seem like even less of an honor (see the Fiesta Bowl this past year)......

and it's just going to add one more week for the media to pound the controversey of who was left out into our heads with a shovel.
