Great, fun article.. http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3815656 He bashes the hell out of the beloved "Houndstooth legends" Alabama. I can not say that I disagree with this article. I also believe Utah should be named the national champion. Could you imagine if Florida was undefeated but were not given the chance to play in the NC because their conference was not "strong" enough? SEC fans and the media would go nuts! Like Rick Reilly says, the media wants to crown USC but Utah beat the team that beat them.. haha... Utah Utes 2008 National Champions..
If strength of schedule didn't count, then where would you draw the line? What if Troy played the twelve worst teams in college football and were undefeated. Would they deserve to be in the big dance...or even in the conversation? Florida / OU will have just as many wins as Utah despite the loss and will have beaten multiple ranked teams to get there. That counts for more than just an "undefeated season".
Uhhh. Didnt that happen with Auburn a few years ago. We went nuts but no one else did.... They went undefeated and were on the outside looking in. Utah is a good team but sorry put them in the SEC or Big 12 and they have 2-3 losses easily. The grind of those conferences is sickening. They caught Bama flat footed and possibly a bit overrated, I dont buy into Bama fans saying "They would be the 2nd best team in the SEC west" I thing 8 out of 10 Ole Miss, LSU and Bama would beat them. Just my opinion of course. Imagine if Utah had to play UGA, Bama, LSU, Ole Miss, and Florida in about a 7 week span. Do you really think they win more then would lose those games. I think not. But again just my opinion. Which is wrong more often then right..
We already had this scenerio when Auburn was undefeated, and left out of the dance a couple of years ago. I beliveve it was USC and Oklahoma who played for the title and USC won. Of course Auburn did not get a runners up AP prize. They only do that for USC.
Utah has beat multiple ranked teams, including one that was ranked #1 for most of the year. ANother that will finish in the Top 8, TCU, OSU beat USC, no matter what they end up, this was a big win for them in addition when they played BYU who won 10 games they were ranked. How many SEC schools go to Michigan to play? Utah can't help the fact they were the worst Mich team in recent history. The schedule is what it is..............If Texas had played Alabama and won they would really be crowing about how they deserve the AP NC. As it is they barely beat #10, with 2 losses and think that win is better than what Utah did. Bottom line is Hawaii is the ONLY non-bcs school to lose a BCS bowl. On any given Saturday..........or Thursday, or Friday you never know.:geaux:
Imagine this, imagine that................bottom line is they won ALL the games on their schedule to include an SEC team that went undefeated in conf play. They don't play a series in football, it's one and done for the year most of the time. Caught Alabama flatfooted, how about they didn't look like they even put on their uniforms to me. That was a complete asskicking.:geaux:
poor rick reilly trying hard to seem relevant again. what a waste of 3 million spent by the worldwide leader. here's their schedule: so they beat an Oregon St team that lost to stanford and drilled by Oregon in a must-win game? why does this win not impress me for the utes? and they beat TCU whose only game against a major conference team was OU and they got shellacked. there is no way in good conscience I could vote Utah #1 after looking at these schedules. Im sorry, BYU, TCU and Oregon St do not impress me enough to warrant the ranking. alabama, yeah. if it was for the NC. but it was not. bama knew it wasnt playing for the NC when Utah knew this game may end up being theres. major difference. very similar to the Rose Bowl two years ago when Michigan was drilled by USC. USC was playing for the AP counterfeit trophy while Michigan was just there for a bowl victory. these teams should not get NC consideration when the opposing team has no shot. doesnt add up.
What you forget about in that 2004 season is that: Utah, Oklahoma, USC, Boise, and Auburn were all undefeated.. This season, just ONE team is undefeated. Plus, the media uses that year as an example of how they will never let an undefeated SEC team get left out ever again, just sucks Auburn had to be the gennie pigs for that one. So tirk, you're telling me Bama didn't want to win their first BCS bowl in 10 years because it wasn't a NC? Haha, they were in Shreveport the past two years, I'm pretty sure they wanted this one. $hit, the MWC was a better conference than the Big 10, ACC, and Big East this year. All I'm saying, Utah hasn't gotten the love they deserve and they beat everyone on their schedule.. including blowing out a team who was 5 minutes away from going to the NChampionship.
