With so much talent and solid recruiting, Coach Miles will probably win 9+ games each season for the foreseeable future. Can LSU hang on to him? Will another school (or the NFL) lure him away? Are the days of Schembechler, Paterno, and Bear Bryant gone forever? Can LSU football maintain it's current trajectory without hanging on to a head football coach for more than 4 years? Does it matter? I think it matters, but talk amongst yourselves...I'm all ears. ____________________ lsutigerbait.blogspot.com
The days of a coach like Charlie Mac spending 20 years at a college are over. One unproductive season and you're fired--one national championship and you're hired away. Today, if a coach has a Spurrier-like 10-year run, it is remarkable.
The dynasties could be over. Some of it is that the fans get impatient and if the coach does well for a while, then slips for a few years, the fans want to can him. Then the coaches have a little more greed. They seem to always think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence (saban). Then there's Billy Donovan, and he may have figured it out. Tom Osborne could have left Neb. for the NFL I'm sure, but he wanted the Lincoln lifestyle, and I think it was good for him. He didn't get all crazy for money. Some of it is on the fans, some is on the new generation of coaches, and their pride and ambition does not seem to allow them to stay put if they've achieved some success.
There's only one program that might be able to lure Miles away, and that's Michigan. Would it be the end of the program if that happened? No, I'm confident that we could go out & hire another good coach to maintain our program.
IMO CLM is not NFL material. He may go there some day but I don't seem him succeeding. He would be crazy to leave LSU for another college. The south is a football player factory, he'll always have good players. As long as something doesn't change he'll have winning seasons for the rest of his career and be one of the top paid college coaches in the nation. Why leave that?
I think that it would be foolish for Miles to jump ship, I thought (but was glad) that it was foolish for Saban to go to the Dolphins, and it was really foolish for Spurrier to leave the gators. Who knows what any of us would do in their position?
It's been over at LSU since 1980. We haven't had a coach last longer than 5years since then. If Les Miles leaves it will not be for the money IMO. He has been treated very poorly by many LSU fans who can't seem to get past the 2005 TN game. Too bad really, Miles is a top caliber coach.
Lets just say Miles takes the Michigan job (I doubt, but crazier things have happened.) Pellini, in my opinion will be offered a head gig next year, and will leave, so does LSU make him the lead candidate and offer him the job at LSU? Just wondering what some of you think.
True about Miles having a rough go after the Tenn. game, but his record, his recruiting, his personality is friendly, commitment he has demonstrated to the team, and saban cutting one on the way out of Miami and taking the Bama job, have all solidified Miles spot. I think he has been totally accepted by most of the fans now. There are still some holdouts, but you'll never please everyone. Some folks you can't please no matter what.
I agree. Honestly, I cringe when he talks to the media - he's a bit awkward. But I'll take that and 22-4. Everyday. Hope he stays for awhile.
