Tennessee controls the neutral zone on both sides and knocks off USC 23-20 in the Rose Bowl. Ohio State drubs Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl, 31-13 doing everything Tech does, but only better. Texas outlasts a game (and 10-1) Louisville club in the Fiesta Bowl, 34-27. Tennessee is automatically the BCS champ, but the Harris folks simply bump Texas up one spot to #1, and the AP, perhaps anticipating this, gives OSU the nod on a "collective body of work" logic. Who deserves to be called national champion? How many of these teams would you (CFN) recognize as having legitimate claims? Would you say there are tri-champions? – CS
A: The winner of the BCS champion is the champion. CFN, AP, The Harris Poll, and the Ocala Star-Banner might have someone different, but the rules are in place and, as unfair as it might be, the BCS champion has to be considered the champion to give the world of college football any credibility.
Can you tell me the biggest winning margin in USC football history? Also, who was the quarterback of the losing team? Thanks. – John
A: In 1925, USC squeaked by Pomona-Pitzer 80-0. I think Jason White was under center for the Sagehens.
So I go to school in Atlanta and I'm going to visit my girlfriend up in Columbus, Ohio for a weekend or two this fall. I'm trying to figure out what weekend to leave my gameplan-laced television and miss college football. What will be the least painful weekend? or in other words, what's will be worst weekend in college football this fall? – Julian
A: How dare you choose a little smoochy smoochy over a college football weekend? That’s what January is for. Then again, I spent the 1988 Hurricane – Seminole game teaching an underwear model about football, so I’m not one to talk. O.K. if you really need to get your fix, go up next weekend. Most of the dog games are right off the bat with the exception of Miami vs. Florida State on Monday night. Outside of the Oklahoma – Texas showdown and the Iowa at Purdue game, October 8th isn’t a peach with most of the SEC taking the week off.
