Was cruising Rivals/Scout looking at the 2010 recruits for LSU. I noticed that there aren't many LA players on the list. Whole lotta TX.

Still pretty new following this, so wondering if that's normal for the timing? Or is next year's LA class significantly down in terms of big talent (high-3, 4 and 5 stars)?

A typical year for Louisiana will be 1-2 5* followed by 10-15 4*. If you were looking at the top100 lists, you probably would only see 3 or 4. And thats about average.

This year we may end up with 4 5* players on rivals (Ford), which has never happened. I'm not even sure 3 5* players has ever happened.

The 2010 class is going to be down this year compared to this year in terms of dpeth. In depth I mean less prospects getting offers from BCS conference schools.

Our 2004 class had 3-5* players: Xavier Carter, Early Doucet, Claude Wroten.

Texas also has more press coverage, broader evaluations, and just a boat load more kids. They will have more highly rated kids as a matter of course. Florida and Cali too.

Most years will be. This year was pretty sick in terms of talent.

In 2001, Louisiana had four 5* players: Andrew Whitworth, Marcus Spears, Marquise Hill and Michael Clayton. LSU also picked up Ben Wilkerson to give them five 5* players in their recruiting class. These guys turned out to be the bedrock of our 2003 National Championship.

He's talking about prospects produced by LA, not necessarily those signed by LSU. I'm pretty sure Xavier was from Florida, not sure about Wroten.

Even more precisely, I was looking at the kids that Rivals says LSU is "recruiting". I'm not exactly sure how accurate that is. But that list doesn't contain a lot of LA kids.
